I thought a 30 day cooling off period is if the customer changes their mind? In this case the customer has not changed their mind, they have been told that the company can not provide what they ordered, which is different.

Absolutely. Cooling off periods are irrelevant here. It is a simple case of breach of contract.

"a position of knowledge" is all fine and well but everyone has knowledge (even BK employees :P). Whether it is relevant and valid is a completely different matter. For instance, a plastic surgeon shouldnt be giving advice on organ transplant. The general principle may be the same but the difference is in the details - very important details.

As for telling me to chill, i am perfectly chill. If you'll notice, i'm the one being adult and have refrained from entering into the childish "my dad is bigger than your dad".

And yes, laws do change. If it were impossible for laws to change there would be no court of appeals. The majority rely on case precedents however, just because it has previously been so does not mean that it will continue to be. New precedents can be set. Hence why it is irrelevant to mention something learned 17 years ago. Practices/methods become obsolete or are modified.
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride

    Laws don't change that quickly....

The reference to 17 years was when I started my legal training. In the years since I have qualified as a solicitor and, believe it or not, stayed pretty up to date with the law. Kind of required when it is your job.

Forgive me if I ignore all the argy-bargy etc etc, I have just found that confusing and I regret to say not helpful to the ADHD brain with which I was born! Anyway, I'm bigger than all your dads put together so... this is just to say I wrote on Saturday asking for a return of deposit within 7 days explaining that we paid the deposit on the basis they could supply this order and hope that that we won't be made to wait 30 days because of their mistake selling us goods they could not supply. We will see what happens.

If they do not return our deposit in 7 days' time I will take it up with the credit card company and probably post in the special section reserved for praise/damning for all time!

    Any advance?

You didn't answer the question that was asked by the OP. Did you? You answered a question that wasn't asked. I pointed that out. Apologies if that upsets or annoys you. The OP knew they were due their deposit back. They were questioning what was a reasonable timescale for this to happen. I hope you don't try to use your reply: 'Eh? At least i answered.' in the course of your business when a client asks a question and you give an answer to another one you thought they asked.

Why would it upset or annoy me?

Re-read my post - the OP is entitled to the deposit back. What may assist you to understand if I said "now". Clearly an entitlement can be enforced immediatlely.

I'm pleased to say our deposit was returned very promptly once I had rung the head office, following up the registered delivery letter.
