That's given me the incentiive to read my water meter, assuming it is where I think it is!
If its not lol -you can check you've got the right one as the serial no has to be shown on the bill - your water co 'should' make an appointment for someone to come out & show you! be prepared tho for the CSA on the phone to not be able to make the appoinment there & then - an offer of appointment will usually come in the post.I THINK is a whole sentence, not a replacement for I KnowSupermarket Rebel No 19:T0 -
They might not make an appointment it could just be a cold call , if not it they should leave a diagram of where it is.0

It's funny isn't it ... how these simple things get so irritating. Severn Trent make a lot of money - just how much more would they and a lot of the utilities make if they were really efficient? But, well done for sticking with it;)
Personally I'd have 'phoned the meter reading in (or via their website) and made sure they issued a revised bill. They have little choice but to accept it -if they're working from estimate (but do realise you were intent on also solving the Jan mis-read)
Condensation shouldn't be an issue as all meters I've seen have a little 'windscreen' wiper inside. It's a bit of plastic that moves across the inside to clear the inevitable condensation in ground mounted meters - operated by finger (or stick if the meters out of reach).I've read the meter twice since 24th Aug, and its not going backwards, but is only registering about 1 - 2 units a week.
Hopefully that's only 1 - 2 part (10ths??) units - otherwise he's using more than average - or has a leak somewhere after the meter? If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -

Yes it is a problem , not all meters have this device you mention its probably company specific dependant on what water co serves you, none of AW meters have this device at all, condensation is a problem on the old 1990 ish Kent meters with the plastic tops, the newer ones have glass and hardly any have this problem anymore.0 -

Yes - but they don't need it, the grounds always warm down there? I remember the Summer of '76 in Essex:rolleyes: - I don't think the soil's ever cooled down properly since. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -

Hi there, I did ring the reading in, and was told they would not put it on the system as it was less than the January read. Third time i used the automated reading service, and got a letter saying not accepted as less than "actual" read in january.Mikeyorks wrote:Hopefully that's only 1 - 2 part (10ths??) units - otherwise he's using more than average - or has a leak somewhere after the meter?
Of the first 4 digits, the last one moved approx one a week (not the red digits) and he hardly uses water at all, is this still high???
(and he's had nothing in writing yet from the man coming to look at the meter:()0 -
1 unit is 1000 litres, it is low usage 1 unit a week0

Sorry - did part predict that from my bit in brackets - but should have fully realised they wouldn't accept a lower than their 'actual' reading. Apologies

Yes - from your original post where you say how sparing he is with water. The average domestic consumption is around 130 - 150 litres per person per day. and one of the 'black' digits is a cubic metre of water = 1000 litres = 220 gallons. So he's using 1000 litres against the average of 910 - 1050 litres. Which puts him bang on average - whereas you consider he uses far less than average?
So he flushes the loo a lot - or he has a leak (his system - not him;) ) - somewhere after the meter

Good point, thank you, I shall pop round and check the readings again!
1 bath a week (sometimes not even that!) wash every morning (not convinced that happens every morning either;)) very little washing up as he doesn't cook, and doesn't make hot drinks, so maybe he either needs the loo alot or has a leak in the water (I shall delicately have to question this one!)0
