Nokia 6230 + Car Cradle

Can anyone help please.

We bought a new car in April and took advice regarding a fitted cradle and which was the best phone to get.
We bought a new Nokia 6230 but when it arrived (it came through our business head office) it's the updated 6230i. Apparently the 6230 has been discontinued.

The phone now wont work properly in the cradle because the software's different :(

The car manufacturer and showroom pass the buck and the manufacturer says that it does point this anomaly out on its website (you do have to look really, really hard though) The showroom customer care manager says it's happened before but the manufacturer wont do anything about it.
I've gone round and round in circles and got totally cheesed off - I don't have the time to follow it any more.

Software upgrade they say will cost us (quite a bit) We just feel aggrieved at taking advice and everyone getting it wrong.

The cheapest and quickest solution seems to be to purchase a second hand 6230, but the only place I can seem to see them is ebay and I'm sceptical of buying a phone off there.

Don't suppose anyone knows where I could get a decent one do they?
The network we're with is Orange btw.

Thanks for any answers.

Only place I can think of is eBay. Why are you sceptical? If you go for someone that has a good feedback rating, and you can pay by PayPal, you'll pretty much be OK, as you can claim anything back from PayPal if things go wrong!

I would agree with that comment from CM86. I have recently sold 4 mobile phones on eBay that were just sitting in a cupboard (One was a 6230). I have had excellent feed back and can only stress that you thoroughly read any advert so that you are getting exactly the model and spec applicable to you.
IMO Always pay by paypal so that you do have something to fall back on should any deal turn sour and wherever possible look at the history of the seller. The information will help you decide
    Good luck in your search;)

The bloke who I get my car kits from has an online shop and hosts his own technical forum if you ask on there they will give you the best solution.

They will need to know make and model of car, if genuine Nokia kit or manufacture kit and a discription of problem.

They really are good fitters with a wealth of knowledge.

No connection other than a happy customer.

  • Thank you for all the replies.

I'm a bit sceptical about ebay because someone in our office has had a couple of bad experiences over electrical type equipment, and as I'm not all that au fait with sorting out problems on there I'm just cautious.

I'll make an enquiry via that forum thanks Cumbrian, and yes I'd be happy to swap phones myself, but it's a work phone so I'd need to find out if they'd be ok with that or not you see, Laudo, I'll PM you incase you don't see this.
  • Tescos are selling the 6230 for £109 but I guess you want to get it a bit cheaper than that.

Having done a bit of research if you car kit was a Nokia cark-91 for the older 6310 and has been upgraded with a CA-55 cable and CR-56 cradle then the charging not supported is a known issue. It is to do with modern pop port phones using usb protocols and the only solution is to upgrade the car kit to a CK-7W bluetooth kit. These can be obtained for £64.90 on Amazon

CM, it will charge the phone, and works via Blue Tooth connection, but the phone memory isn't supported. Therefore you can answer calls hands-free, but can't access any of the stored numbers - which as it's a business phone is a bit useless for us when driving.

Many thanks again to all, will pass your info on to my O/H and might even look at that Tesco offer (which is cheaper than upgrading the software I think)

My contract phone is coming to an end. so I could just get an Orange SIM and utilise the spare phone as a PAYG.
  • Ah if the kit is supposed to access the phone book entries then it sounds more like a Nokia 610 or 616 car kit which utilises Sim Access Profile (SAP)

What software needs updating? the phone 6230i or the car kit 616

I've got to confess I'm a bit out of my depth here CM.
The kit I guess, BUT, the kit is one supplied and fitted by the Land Rover main dealer. It's on their website somewhere but I can never go straight to it :(

I would keep on looking now, but I've just had a call to go and meet someone, I'll have to check it out tomorrow.

It's a cradle that fits in the centre console (underneath the lid of the armrest type thing) of the Range Rover Sports - and I think what they're saying is that it's compatible with the 6230 - whilst the phone supplied now is the 6230i with updated software (obviously the cradle not being updated)

Well, that's how I see it anyway. Will confirm it.

Meanwhile, thank you for taking an interest :)

You can download the Landrover approved phones list etc. I see now that they have the 6230i on the list, I can't confirm whether or not that was there when we bought the car at the end of March. All we did was instruct the dealer that we wanted a cradle to suit, and it was fitted prior to delivery.
    Thanks
