Odd phone calls?

I just got one of those calls from 0800 783 8422
I'd like to know how they got my number as it's new and ex-dir.
Last night I had 3 calls in the night from various numbers in various UK cities where I don't know anyone. Is that all part of some hound the debtors strategy ? 3 wrong numbers in one night from 12.45 to 2.45am ??
I have registered with TPS as suggested but I note that according to the registration screen :
"The registration has been successful.
Please note that it will take up to 28 days for your registration to be fully active."
I'll hope I don't have another night like last night I have difficulty sleeping as it is.
The balcony ledge is looking more and more inviting.
