Odd phone calls?

I keep getting missed calls on my mobile and home phone from 0800 783 8422. It rings once then hangs up. If I manage to answer it's just silence.

If I call this number back it's an automated message that says "You were called by HSBC Bank. No further action is required by yourself"

This has been going on for over 2 weeks now, sometimes they call 10 times a day, some days not at all. They call at 7am and 11pm. It's driving me mad! Everytime I call HSBC they say they have no record of someone trying to call me. (I do have an account at HSBC)

Is there anything I can do? Is there a purpose behind these calls? Is it really HSBC?

Sorry if this is in the wrong place, I wasn't sure where to put it. Please feel free to move/delete if necessary.

Thanks, Rebekah

  • I am getting the exact same on my home phone. Never replied as I thought it could have been a scam.
So thanks for bringing it to light

But if it is HSBC why do they hang up after 1 ring? and if I answer they don't say anything?

I think it's an automated thing. Computer rings you, you pick up, it logs you as being in. Human then rings you up and pesters you. Annoying. I've listed my number as TPS here. Stopped them dead.!

We had a similar kind of problem with Bank of Scotland for a while. But we could answer the phone and then after a slight delay the caller would hang up without speaking. Eventually we got a call where the caller spoke and we asked what was going on. As Zahc mentioned in the post above they admitted it was an automatic dialler thing. The computer dials the number and the caller is given so long to take up the call. If the caller doesnt take the call the computer hangs up the line.
Suggest you ring HSBC customer services, discuss the problem and if it doesnt stop threaten to take your account elsewhere. Worked for us.

report them to TPS and they'll get fined. Better still, ring them and tell them that you're on the TPS list and explain to them that if you get jusy 1 more call from them it will cost them. I quite enjoy a rant every so often!!;)
  • I'm glad I'm not the only one! Have just started getting these calls - but have now registered with this TPS, so hopefully it'll stop soon!
