I'd chuck a big bottle of bleach in there, half fill it with water, swoosh it around with a big stick and leave it. I'd then stir it every now and again.... after a couple of hours I'd give it all a thorough brushing down using a broom/whatever. Then I'd tip the water out and leave the lid off until it's dried out.

Putting a lid on it while the water's in there's essential. I did this with a standard plastic bin once, no lid .... and next door's kitten leapt onto the bin.... and with no lid straight into the bleach mix. I grabbed it straight out, it ran off ... and I had to knock on the neighbour's door to explain what had just happened in case the kitten looked distressed/itchy later. It was fine though.

Just googled bin cleaners, but nothing in my area really - epsom surrey. I'll hold my nose and have a go myself - it won't be for another week now when they empty it.

I bought a long handled broom with extending handle which screws onto a hose which is aimed at cleaning caravans etc! I just use it dry though. Cost about £9...Tip the bin on its side to use. My bin isn't that dirty as I use bin bags inside (still using the council ones which predate wheelies)- but i would also tie stuff up in carrier bags while we can still get them. For the green waste bin- garden waste, peelings etc we are permitted to put a few sheets of newspaper at the bottom, that keeps the bin reasonably clean. If that doesn't come out when emptied I just use a hoe to push it together, scoop it out and then just swill the bin with water. I try not to use bleach- a squirt of washing up liquid works fine.

Our wheely-bin cleaners only charge £1.70 a bin - if it went up, I'd do it myself. We really started using them when we were both at work all day, but now I am retired, I could do it myself.

I do the recyclable paper one about once every couple of months with a pressure washer - works Fine - but I think I'd also use some sort of disinfectant on the smelly one.

I hope our wheely bin cleaners don't read these posts - £2.95 ? - they'd never get away with that here in Yorkshire!

In the 6 or 7 years we've had wheely bin at my parents its never been washed out and it doesn't smell overly bad. Its a bin it allway going to smell somewhat just shut the lid and let the rain take care of the outside.

I did mine on Wednesday. about 1/8th of a bottle of value disinfectant about 40p a bottle, water from water butt about one large watering can. Leave for a few minutes then I use a long angled yard soft brush to wash the disinfectant around the edges and lid. Problem done in 5 minutes costs around 20p at most

    I dont get any maggots

I bag rubbish I have a large Brabantia bin (50 litres) I use cheap version of bags for that bin at tescos. I never once had any maggots that I could see and I also put cat litter in bin but bagged and occasionally smells in Summer I always make sure lid is closed

We are 4 adults in house so bin is always full

I mop the kitchen floor on the day the bins are emptied so I just fling the contents of the mop bucket in, and like Becles, upend it until it dries...I swish it to agitate it then use the mop if necessary - so it's warm water and Floor cleaner (like flash but store's own) in there.

I've not seen any maggots!!! EEEeeeeeuuu.
The only problem with cleaning it myself is where to tip the water afterwards? You have to think that in the bottom there is a lot of built up gunk. I should add that we bought the house a few months ago and I don't think the previous tennants ever cleaned the bin out.
