I just went to make a payment to a friend online and it said that I couldnt and had to ring a number.
I rang the number, expecting to set it up and then be able to pay people online, after listening to a recorded voice droning on for 20 minutes I eventually got through to someone, had to tell them all the details of the person I wanted to pay, then she told me I would need to ring every time I want to pay someone!!! !!!!!!!!! it would be quicker to write a cheque and drive it round to the person I owe £20 to!!
ANyway, last straw, I then went online to pay after giving all these details and it didnt work!!!:mad::mad:
Why have they done this? do other banks do this? I have been looking at changing for a while as HSBC are pretty crap.

Well lloydstsb are doing this for new customers but the halifax don't do this at the moment so try the halifax.0 -
Its a new thing from what the leaflet that I got said you can pay existing friends and any companies registered with them (bill payments) but you have to phone up or go into a branch for new people but the next time you want to send to them it should be alright, if you can get them on there in the first place.0

There are not many times I would want to pay the same person more than once and I really dont appreciate having to phone an 0845 number for 20 minutes each time I want to pay someone. It is cheaper and easier for me to write a cheque. Better still to find a bank which doesnt do this!
Which means they are going to lose 7 accounts from our family - two of them being business accounts.0 -
At Halifax they will sometimes phone you to confirm an online payment.
However, this only happens when you are logging in to your account from an unusual location - i.e. somewhere where you don't tend to use your account - and carrying out an unusual transaction.
They display a code on the screen, and when they phone you (it's an automated system), you enter in the code that's on screen. Takes about 20 seconds in total and is much simpler and quicker than this system of HSBC's, or than banks like Natwest and Barclays that use a cardreader.
Plus it's only a tiny percentage of transactions that go through this - most people will never ever have to do this and all bill payments will go straight through instantly.0 -

So pay them a cheque then.

I had to ring to set up the first payment. It only took a few minutes, and I was able to make the payment immediately, as I was already logged in.
I now have the facility to set up any new payees online, no phone call involved.0 -
Like it or not, this sort of procedure will be put in place to minimise fraud.
It's the price we all have to pay.0 -

I have now.
But considering it would usually take less than a minute to make a payment online, I am not happy with having to phone an 0845 number, then waiting, then still not being able to do it. What happens next time I want to make a payment.
Also banks will eventually phase out cheques, so where does that leave me?
