Hi
I'm going to upgrade my 40 inch LCD....looking for something around 55-60 inch...ideally wanted an LED but I'm priced out for ones that size....
...I've always believed that LCD were 'better' than Plasma..but it's occured to me I have no idea why!...when I've looked in the shops the superior quality of the LED picture is obvious...but what are the actual differences between LCD and Plasma?...as there are some really good deals around on large screen Plasmas at the moment that I'd like to look at..subject to finding out the differences from people whom really know about these things
thanks

My personal opinion. This is my own opinion and based on my observations of what I perceive.
I've found that my Plasma gives a richer picture. On Fast and Furious, I could tell the difference in the gloss texture of the paint on one of the cars and the satin texture of the graphics on that car. Couldn't do that on my LCD. In Avatar, when they're walking through the forest at night, the luminescence of the plants they touch seems far more pronounced.
My friend has a high spec 50" Sony LCD. When you've an object moving across the screen in a pan shot, such as a lamp post or building corner - there is noticable juddering and multiple images - none of which are present on my Plasma.
Standard definition on my 42" Plasma looks better than my 32" LCD TV and that 32" looked far better than my other mates 40" Samsung LCD.
You can buy a 50" LG Plasma for the same price as a LCD so the price difference is less comparable.
What swings it for me is this though: Take a look at this page.
http://www.avforums.com/tv/reviews.html
Look at the right hand column labelled Verdict. Notice how most of the LCDs are "average" with only four getting "excellent" whereas for Plasma, there are only two which are "average" and 13 which are "excellent" even though there are far more reviews of LCD.0 -
cheers Hammyman..that's very helpful :-)
as for the comment 'I'm amazed that this has never been asked on here before. '....I apologise for not having time to be on here often enought to post over 4,000 times..but thanks for the input0 -
plasma are better on screens 42 and over although heavier and cost more to run but have to be handled properly like one of ours that was tipped on moving now is no use to anyone as it has a white powder covering the picture, this doesnt happen with lcds wish are also much lighter and cheaper to run although have more drag on the pictures during fast sceens or football and the likeDon't talk about yourself so much... we'll do that when you leave.:p0

Theres little between LCDs and PLASMAS these days. Pioneer made the very best tvs going which were plamas which is why theyre so highly rated, and Panasonic are well known for their plasmas
SONY make very good LCDs whilst other manufacturers can be a bit flakey with what they make
Id put my 46" Sony up against most plasmas. (And I have Pioneer 42" plasma too so I have a fair idea of what im talking about)
I wouldnt ever compare a tv with what a friend has as theyre almost always never properly set up
The only thing that seperates them really is movement, LCDs still tend to have a higher 'pixel response' time compared to plasmas. Everything else is tv specific. Any LCD or Plasma could have deep blacks, very good scaler, well calibrated colours etc.:idea:0 -
