Thanks Chris.
I will ask my vet about zinc deficiency.
I've been using the coconut oil both in his feed and also topically. He used to scratch like mad and bite his paws and have ear infection after ear infection. He now has a nice sheen to his coat and bites/scratches less but its not entirely gone.
Skypie, try and get hold of some old fashioned Thornit powder for his ears (ebay) You can use it for ears its really good. We have used it for years and its worth every penny. You will see a difference after just one day.
Chris n TJ x

Thanks Chris I have ordered some for him.
Poor babe has always had poorly ears and I so want to help him.
I have been using earwipes and bringing out brown stuff and these drops I got from Pets at Home (smell like tea tree oil) but he is still shaking his head.I have realised I will never play the Dane!

The Thonit should really help. A little tip when using it is, use the flat end of a teaspoon it makes it easier to get into the ear. Give it a wee rub, and use every other day for at least 2 weeks.
By the way it stinks lol. You dont really use that much a bottle should last you at least 6 months maybe longer.
Skypie what breed is he and how old please. Another daft question is he white?

Hi Chris he is a border collie cross and is 10 now. He is blacky grey with a white head and shoulders. I think he is crossed with some sort of terrier.
He used to smell dreadful but since the coconut oil in his feed he doesnt smell (apart from his head for some reason).I have realised I will never play the Dane!

LOL
Mine has it primarily for smelly feetSeriously.
Obviously there can be various reasons why an animal can smell, more often than not due to poor feeding/nutrition and illness.
Also heat(sweat) can add to it and I have also found that 'old' hair can contribute too. My dog is groomed every day but as mentioned on another post has serious issues with feet/legs being touched/brushed or getting within an inch of!! This resulted in lots of dead hair in legs and really whiffy feet/legs.
The garlic has been pretty good at controlling it and there has never been a problem with fleas!0 -
Thats what I heard about garlic. I've used it on my horse for that reason and also for breathing probs (copd and asthma)
I found within days of feeding coconut oil to Scraggy he stopped smelling! Apparently its well known for this.I have realised I will never play the Dane!

It is meant to have very good deodorising properties and after the improvement in my (very smelly dog) Scraggy I can heartily recommend it!I have realised I will never play the Dane!

skypie, did I advise you looked at Dermactron products for your dog? Mine have allergies (MUCH worse in the summer) and they are under control by using this stuff - after years of steroids, anti biotics, vets shampoos and blood tests. I recently started using the ear drops and the dogs thank god, have been fine for the first summer ever. I use the shampoo bar on them and keep a pot of the cream for spots. Just started using the ear drops a couple of months back and oh, its wonderful not to have to get one in particular steroids for his itchy red ears.
