the question has been asked before several times. to answer question yes it can be done with variety and you can live heathily on this.I was thinking about just having sandwhiches at lunch with fruit and yoghurt and a cheap breakfast cereal maybe. Its just the evening meal i have no imagination for! But pasta bakes sound good....0

One evening meal I could never tire of is jacket potatoes! There is an infinite number of fillings you can serve with them, eg; cheese/beans/tuna/curry made with leftover meat/chilli (ditto)/coleslaw/salad...........0

If anyone can point me to a similar thread or give me any suggestions then i would be extremely grateful!
Money is v. tight at the moment and I want to know if its possible to spend only £10 on food shopping for one adult per week? I want to eat healthily but not on rations! Can anybody give me any suggestions on places to visit what to buy, recipe ideas etc. I'm not a vegie but i would like to include so meat in my diet if poss....
Sorry if this has been covered a million times before but i don't have time really to search!
Cleaning stuff, toiletries etc does not have to come out of this. It comes from a separate budget.
Thanks in advance........:j
I'm no expert but this is a recipe I like. (sorry no cooking times or precise measurements)
Tinned Tuna & Tomato Pasta
Some onion (never tried this but Asda frozen diced onion is 84p for 907g) you can get fresh Onions in asda or perhaps cheaply in a market.
If you have some pasta/Rice - 3kg at Asda for £1 (should last ages).
Tin of Asda Smartprice Tomatoes : 13p or 15p chopped
Tin of Tuna Fish: 29p for smartprice Tuna (never tried it)
Asda Smartprice Frozen Peas (907g) 54p or
if you prefer Asda Smartprice Frozen Sweetcorn for 63p (907g)
Again they the frozen veg should last ages.
mixed herbs
Boil the pasta or the rice in a separate pan.
Fry the onion and then the tuna (in some of the tuna fish oil) Add the tinned tomatoes, herbs and cook for a while . Add the frozen peas or sweetcorn towards the end of the cooking. Serve with rice or pasta. I prefer pasta.
This should give you 2 meals.0 -
i should imagine you could do it... with carefull. planning....and shopping....and making sure... that nothing is wasted.....also make items go further... i used to go through loads of cheese..... but now i buy a small amount...and as soon as i get home.. from shopping i grate the whole lot.....and keep it in an old ice cream container....so now instead of spending £2 - £3 on cheese i only spend about £1..
good luck.....keep us all updated on how you are managing...with you budget....Work to live= not live to work0 -
hi loubie loo!
£10 a week for 2 adults is the norm for me, inc some cleaning stuff that i buy from the supermarket, eg, loo roll & washing powder.
the "adults" in my family are me, and my 13 year old son who has hollow legs when it comes to eating:D
sort of things i buy are liver, either ox or pigs, a 50p pack is plenty for 2, lovely with mashed spuds (5kg for about £1.30 from tesco) and carrots, with thick onion gravy. plenty of change from £2, in fact, enough to make a pudding, if you're feeling idle, tesco sponge mix, 27p, whisk with one egg, add a spoon of jam, and microwave for 2mins 20 secs.
sausages, either be posh & buy cumberland or lincs etc, or i find the tesco extra value (about 48p) are quite tasty for the money. sausage and mash, with thick gravy, with peas or whatever other vegs you have in the cupboard.
tuna and pasta bake, cheap and cheerful, use cheap cheese for cooking.
iceland usually have an offer on their boneless chicken breasts, use one breat per person and do a stir fry chuck in anything you have in the fridge or cupboard that needs using up.
i usually buy the cheapest bag of onions i can find, adds a bit of flavour to many meals.
i also shop at lidl, and between lidl, tesco and iceland, usually one or the other place has family size pies on offer for not much more than £1 each. frsh vegs are pennies to add to this.
just a thought, but one of my favourite cheap and cheerful meals is good old egg and chips. tesco extra value eggs (mind you, i am lucky here cos my neighbour keeps chickens, and i do get my eggs for free!) about £1.15 for 15 eggs, so egg & chips for 2, and bread and butter, less than a quid for the lot.
we are big meat eaters, and also have huge portions. doesnt have to cost a fortune. breakfast is toast, or cereal, lidl is good for cereals. snacks and lunch, you can often find bread reduced, buy in bulk and freeze. wafer thin ham goes a long way, and looks a lot in a sandwich, or we enjoy tesco's corned beef, 8 slices for 74p. cheese sarnies, etc.
tend to shop in the market/home bargains for cakes and biscuits.
also tend to take advantage of whatever bogof or reduced offers there are, as we both eat more or less anything.
hth, and good luck!

I can't believe you just said that!
But anyway yes op you can easily feed yourself for £10 a week, no problem at all.
There's already been lots of great posts in this thread with some good links to others so I won't waffle on, but mince, pasta, baked beans, tuna, potatoes, carrots, onions, peas, cheese, lentils and tinned tomatoes are your best friends. You can make so many lovely meals from these things at very little cost. Asda even do 10 fish fingers for 18p and they're not bad at all, if you're stuck.Swagbucks earnings since 22/05/2012 £135 paypal cash

Hi Ruby, what did you mean by the eek? :-) Because frozen onion is so bad/expensive or because you use frozen onion all the time ? I told you I wasn't an expert.;-)
Personally I use proper onions for the recipe and for everything else. I probably put too much onion in the recipe by everyone else's standards but I love them so much!!! However, I don't know how often Loubie Lou would use onions or how much she would use in the recipe. Perhaps frozen would suit her better? I don't know if people freeze their own onions but I have never tried. (That will probably be my next daft question (the last one was about cheese))0 -
Hi Carrottopsuk I meant paying for ready-chopped onions when they are so very cheap to buy fresh.Swagbucks earnings since 22/05/2012 £135 paypal cash

I think it was to do with the fact that you actually buy the onions already chopped! (same as buying grated cheese etc). It's usually more expensive for the privelege of it being ready done for you - I am sure you could get a whole bag of onions for 83p & DIY. Bless!!
(once upon a time I wouldve done exactly the same thing, so dont worry!!). xx
