Can anybody give me any suggestions on places to visit what to buy, recipe ideas etc. I'm not a vegie but i would like to include so meat in my diet if poss....

Sorry if this has been covered a million times before but i don't have time really to search!

i think you could manage.......... not too much variety though........ lots of (cheap) veg with pasta (with cheap tinned tomatoes as a basis for a sauce) and rice. if you want to include meat then a bit of stew with stewing steak, potatoes, carrots, onions etc could last for 3 nights and cost very little. for breakfast you can get very cheap porridge oats that will last a while.

more people with specific suggestions with no doubt be along soon!

  • If it only includes food...you should be ok;) Is there anything particular you like or dislike and maybe we can help with a menu? Will you need to provide lunches from this?

look on the mega index thread for cheapest meals for ideas and suggestions. i think it is do-able as there is so much cheap food out there like the 8p noodles that can be turned into a healthy vegetable stir fry, the left over veg can be made into a soup/stew.
a tin of tuna can be used for a pasta bake with pasta, cheese and tinned tom's.
What do you have in at the moment that you could use up?

Cheating slightly here as there is a similar thread to yours although different amounts, but Black-Saturn has linked to a number of threads in here that should help

Thanks guys. Its for the forseable future until i'm on a better wage then i am now! I like most things really and I definately will be looking a black-saturns thread, i heard so many things about it!

I don't have anything in at the moment, just buying odds a sodds from the shop which is expensive! I was thinking about just having sandwhiches at lunch with fruit and yoghurt and a cheap breakfast cereal maybe. Its just the evening meal i have no imagination for! But pasta bakes sound good....

    Thanks so far

good luck with it loubie lou, don't think of it as a chore or something that you'r not going to be able to do. think of it as a challenge! that way it becomes more fun and you have to be creative. i would read all of the recipies on the cheapest meal for 6 thread, some amazing recipies on there that i have tried and are all really good.

dont forget to stock up on cupboard essentials so you have everything avaliable when your cooking.

good luck. I am sure you can do it.

  • Do you like porridge? You mentioned cheap breakfast cereal, so porridge could be an ideal choice, since it's very cheap and can be flavoured with sweet or savoury added ingredients. I like mine with milk and cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg. If you want to be a real cheapskate, there's the traditional Scottish way, with just water and salt.
Which food shops etc do you have nearby? The Shop But Don't Drop board will keep you updated with many current best buys.
Your food budget sounds realistic to me. It's certainly doable.

You CAN do it, no doubt! I once fed two adults for less than £9 for a week, AND the budget included a daily newspaper

Of course this is possible... but only as an average over a period of weeks. You may need to invest occasionally in items which are more costly but which are consumed over several weeks, such as a jar of coffee.

What you need are two essential items: organisation and self-discipline. Without those two, you can cheerfully wave goodbye to the whole idea.

Where you shop is almost irrelevant so long as it isn't at Waitrose, M&S or similar.

I'd recommend you start by planning a typical week's cheap meals on paper - and then, shop around!
