Barclaycard credit increase

I found over the years that Barclaycard kept upping my limit, moved me from a standard to Gold to Platinum and I ended up with a £25K Credit Limit
And yes I managed to rack it up to that as well over the period with a house, kids and stuff but mainly living beyond my means on a CC, for which I had a few with over £100K available credit
I have finally managed this year to sort out my debt, and have paid off all my cards. I phoned up Barclaycard to close the account, had a Halifax One Card at 12.9% and £10K limit which I was going to keep, but Barclaycard agreed to a 9.9% Limit but were mistified why I wanted to reduce my Credit Limit down to £10K.
Having said that so were MBNA when I called to cancel three Cards, I agreed to keep one as a reserve and close two, but they added all my Credit Limits together to give me £20K instead of the £2.5K requested. So using them for Stoozing with £15K interest free until April 07 which helps the interest on my Offset Mortgage as the Cash is set in my First Direct Savings Account.
Anyway the purpose of this post having lived off Credit Cards for so long is don't get the high limits and get in a mess, it is so refreshing paying with Cash and still having money in the Bank at the end of the month because I have budgeted rather than racking it up on the Credit Card
I too was playing the 0% Interest Games hence the number of Cards and high available Credit, but it only delays the inevitable.
I would love to have never had a credit card and got in the mess I did, but I did. I find I use them today for their main use IMHO Company Expenses & Fuel which I will get back, expensive purchase and Internet Purchases where I want the protection a CC Offers but other than that I will be saving up for the item I want rather than using the CC.Cheers

May I be nosey and ask : what was the original and new limit, and how long had you had the card for?
Also, did they credit check you?0 -
I don't think they check credit for limit increase....all they do is to let the system review and generate a better limit.01. Marriott Rewards VISA (£2700 @ 17.9%)

Don't know if it will help, I don't have a Barclay card, but applied a NATWEST one 3 months ago, got it with 2850 credit limit, wasn't very happy about it.
So I simply phoned them last month and said I would like to increase my credit limit, the guy on the phone told me that they have a "Shadow Limit" which is what he can increase my credit limit to!! Never heard of that term before, he said he could increase my credit limit to 3350 on the spot, condition is I won't be able to ask for another increase for at least 6 months, he also offered me option to speak to their credit limit department which possibly could increase my limit more but no gurantee, so I took it, maybe the OP can just give them a call, no harm trying.0 -
I wish every cc company had this "shadow" term....01. Marriott Rewards VISA (£2700 @ 17.9%)

Interesting - might have to try that one with my NatWest card.0 -

You sir are a star. I just called them and they bumped up my limit on the spot by £500 without the need for a credit check.0 -
Great!! Glad my post helps. So I guess this is kind standard rules with Natwest then.....a 500 shadow credit limit for everyone.0

Barclaycard never increased my credit limit, they called me today against my complaint and told me that being a responsible lender they can't increase the limit. When I told them that I have better limit on other cards, they told me that maybe thats the reason they are not increasing. I'll be closing my card as soon I pay off the balance...01.
