The truth about the budget is that its massively regressive - hitting the poorest and most vulnerable in society to provide Osborne with a warchest for a 2015 pre-election budget giveaway to people better off than you. Thats according to the IFS anyway who crunched the numbers.
Regardless of what you thought about Labour, their budgets were generally redistributive from well off to less well off. Thats all finished now. Enjoy paying for middle class tax cuts!
how is it "massively regressive"? £1,000 increase in the personal allowance, so that's £200 in the pockets of anyone on minimum wage. they would have to spend more than £8,000 on VATable goods to be worse off. pretty difficult to do if you're on minimum wage and earning about £11/12k.
benefits only going to be increased by CPI? since people on benefits get housing benefit to cover their housing costs, why should their other benefits be inflated by the RPI measure which includes housing costs?0 -
Unlike Jennifer_Jane, I am no fan of the coalition but I applaud her contempt for the misfits, grotesques, liars, cheats, twisters and 10th rate 1970s student politicians who have finally been turfed out of office.
After 13 years of lies, control-freakery, gross economic mismanagement and contempt for our basic freedoms under Common Law, the NuLabour Taliban have gone. Compared with them, even Cameron and Clegg seem like an improvement.
And that's a measure of how bad Labour was - not how good Cameron and Co are.
That is how I feel :rotfl:Not Again0 -
2 recent polls this weekend show it is the Lib Dems that are really suffering - both polls show them down to the mid teens in supportYouGov have a poll for the Sunday Times tomorrow – full results are up on the YouGov website here. Topline voting intention figures, with changes from the Thursday poll, are CON 43%(nc), LAB 36%(+2), LDEM 16%(-1). Putting aside YouGov’s poll on Tuesday which looked like a bit of an outlier, this is the higher Labour have been for a long time (though they remain 7 points behind the Conservatives, also high compared to most recent polls), and the lowest the Liberal Democrats have been. Support seems to be polarising around the two main parties. There is also a new ICM poll tonight, carried out for the Sunday Telegraph. The topline figures, with changes from ICM’s poll a week ago, are CON 41%(+2), LAB 35%(+4), LDEM 16%(-5).0

Hmm, strange post, Rochdale. No, Labour actually made me poorer in so many ways. Not just the removal of the 10% tax rate, but in general redistributing so much that we are now in the position, removing tax breaks for dividens in pensions; selling off the gold too cheaply - oh it goes on and on. Britain in such a terrible position now because of Labour and so on.
And actually, I am happy with the Pension 3-way lock although am upset that the Labour Govt and now this one has reneged on the Extra Pension being treated in exactly the same way as the Basic State Pension.
As for this comment from Leveller2911:
'They are ALL snide liars, the reason your wrath is centred on Labour is because they have been in government for the last 13yrs.' (unsure who posted), I took exception to this initially, as I don't enjoy people telling me why I'm thinking something, and after reflection, I have to disagree with you. I'm upset that they continue, in Opposition, to remain snide liars.0 -

Poor Lib Dems they have been stitched up like Turkeys - they should get out now while they have a chance off getting some of their support back. Just seen Vince on Sky news - poor guy totally in denial about the Lib Dems fall in the polls.
The only way for the Lib Dems to improve their support is to show in 4-5 years time that what they did was to put the country first and that the pain was worth it. To drop out now would completely kill them off.0 -

All this politicking is frankly wasted breath.
Vince came across as pragmatic this morning on A.M show. That's what we need right now, pragmatism, not dogmatic politics.0 -

Removing the 10% tax rate that Labour introduced in 1997?
All of the progressive measures in the budget were already in Alaister Darling's plans, principally the 50p income tax rate0 -
It's not a fact, EU citizens have to work and pay tax here for 12 months before they can claim child benefit.
It IS fact.
.......If an Eastern European family comes here and works for yes 12 months and qualifies for Child benefit.
They then go home and we are obliged to pay the child benefit to them in ther country of origin.
It does go on , money is being paid directly into European accounts. The children in many cases are NOT living in this country.
My friend who I have known for 25 years and has no "axes to grind" doesn't lie , she wouldnt know how to.She is frustrated with what she sees is wrong......0 -

Hmmm - yes, because I wasn't in the UK in 1997, only came back in 1998. So yes, Labour made me poorer when they removed the 10% tax rate. And with many other decisions they made over their 13-year tenure.0 -
