So actually your psychiatrist took responsibility for your health and enabled you to retire. The tone of your posts would imply that all people having to stop working due to depression is them shirking responsibility.

I took responsibility for my health by acting on the aspect of my life that was causing my deptression (my job at the time); the psychiatrist's report was required because, just like with DLA, there was a need to have an objective view of the situation rather than just accepting my word on the subject.

Funny you should say that because I had those symptoms for ages. Kept being sent to A&E and getting put on a heart trace. Went on for ages, turned out to be acid & the breathing because I was panicking :rotfl::rotfl:So maybe the diagnosis should be more relevant?

My husband's emphysema has recently been exacerbated by acid reflux. We went to the doctor and told him what it was and suggested the medication for it. Partnership in healthcare.

But that acid reflex can be so so painful - i had it once and honestly thought i was having a heart attack - the pain was scary !

In which case you were arguably very lucky that you could eradicate the cause of your depression. That isn't an option open to everybody who suffers depression and therefore isn't really an appropriate analogy to use to support your assertion.

Putting on your hat for a moment I would have expected your response to what you've posted to be: "but there was no need to retire, you could have got a different job."

I suspect it will start with new claims and over time ie when the claims come up for renewal a medical will be standard. Indefinite I suspect will take longer to get around to as it's a huge undertaking.

Quite honestly I'm livid but unsurprised that the first big announcement by this Tory (ish) government is one singling out those least able to defend themselves.

But that's exactly what I did!

I took early retirement from teaching, took a few months off to recover from the depression (and the hysterectomy) then went to work in a call centre, then worked for a ferry company and eventually back into an earlier career as a Careers Adviser.

I certainly wouldn't have remained out of work all those years and would be working now except for the need to look after my husband.

( I agree that I was fortunate to be able to change the cause of the most severe aspect of my depression , although I've been on and off anti depressants since then and I'm currently back on them now.)
