You've clearly never had depression then.

    It's not about taking responsibility.

I have posted several times about having to take early retirement from a career because of depression, after a full clinical assessment by a psychiatrist.

I get so cheesed off when people keep saying this; it's just an excuse for many people to give up and take responsibility for their own health!

There are many different types of mental health issues, depression being an umbrella term. They also affect people in different ways and there are different degrees of depression. One persons depression is not the same as anothers, just like one persons marrage is not the same as anothers- it affects you differently.

I think some people with depression can and do work and this is great, there may be others that can only manage part time, and right down the other side of the scale, others who are only able to exist in hospital for some time. There is a range! Please try not to be so closed minded- people do tend to take responsibility, there are always those that will scam the system, please don't assume everyone is scamming the system.

DLA helps as it funds the therapy needed to live and volunteer/work/study. .

If people used their DLA for this kind of thing it would be an excellent thing. Unfortunately there is a regular MSE poster with depression who gets irate when this is suggested to her as she spends her DLA on "treats" and holidays.

I fully understand all the comments that with DLA the disgnosis is irrelevent etc etc and obviously peoples needs vary even if they have the same condition - BUT if the diagnosis is so irrelevent, why do the DM's have the list of conditions to refer to and the appropriate medication and probable care/mobility needs of these conditions.

Also think of two scenarios - two claimants are having chest pain and cannot breathe properly - one puts on the form chest pain, difficulty breathing and the other puts diagnosis of lung cancer or extreme asthma or something - it would make the symptoms more understandable...than someone that had the same symptoms but couldnt explain why.

This is not meant to cause an argument - just sitting here in the sun pondering all the comments that you have all made - and thinking that if the diagnosis is totally irrelevent why do they ask for it on the form the send out to the GP/specialist ???

Strange really ??? and why do the DM's use their book of medical conditions as reference if a diagnosis is totally irrelevent ?

Thats far too much thinking for one day - am going to return to the world of summer, while it lasts !!

....and good luck to you all with whatever happens to DLA x

That book really needs to be scrapped. There's a lot of stuff that's not mentioned and sometimes it's mentioned; but not always true.

With the exception of deablindness, they don't take into account those of us with more than one disability.

Some people take responsibility, others do not. There is also a level of people who lie somewhere between being totally incapacitated and scamming the system; these are the ones whose attitudes need to be changed.

So actually your psychiatrist took responsibility for your health and enabled you to retire. The tone of your posts would imply that all people having to stop working due to depression is them shirking responsibility.

Funny you should say that because I had those symptoms for ages. Kept being sent to A&E and getting put on a heart trace. Went on for ages, turned out to be acid & the breathing because I was panicking :rotfl::rotfl:So maybe the diagnosis should be more relevant?

Yes I agree with sh1305 on the DM Book - because may people have said that it is totally out of date or wrong regarding their conditions - and also loads of conditions arent in the book to start with !
