What an anticlimax. I think they wanted everyone to think it would be an apocalyptic budget so that people would be relieved when it wasn't. Doesn't seem like very much has changed at all. Certainly not as bad as was being predicted.

IIRC was going to be 50p per month on your landline rental to pay for broadband to be set up in areas not currently receiving good broadband services and general infrastructure improvements.
This one annoyed me. People like my parents will be paying for it (OAPs) although they will NEVER have broadband or any Internet. It'd be better to take £1 off those with broadband.

    Indeed.

This will calm people down, and increase confidence no end.

    Recovery should continue apace now.

Only if those people are near Calais, or similar port. Most people aren't near a port, are they?

There was a news story about tesco delivering from here to France recently, as the average bag of groceries here was so much less. It seemed such an extreme reversal.

The one seriously dodgy bit is that max LHA 400pw for a four bedroom house, £280 for a single, how will this work in London where I am pretty sure those allowances will not be enough outside of LHA housing.
Having said that I didn't realise that such high allowances were paid until I used this board.

Thanks for the thanks. That was fun although hard work!

One of my posts (on CGT I think) was lost due to the site not taking it up. I tried to be fair although I could only really react to what was being said, not consider things. I certainly didn't have time to read any responses!

It was very interesting to go back and read your comments.

I hope I didn't steal anyone's thunder. The request was there for someone to do this and carpe diem is as good a motto as any.

One thing confused, earlier he said that benefits and pensions would be linked to CPI at the time I assumed this meant State pension? what pension was he talking about.

didn't he say benefits except for the state pension would be linked to CPI.

So, quick recap for me I think:
+£200 - not paying tax on £1000 of earnings
-£120 - increased VAT on stuff I pay for/buy (bills, petrol, fags)
    ======
    +£80/year.

28% for higher rate earners, remains at 18% for basic rate.

no reliefs or taper, but allowances remain the same.

What about those who have taper relief at the moment?

When I used to smoke (a few years ago) I worked out that you could have a holiday in, say Greece, and that would be paid for by the savings on the price of the cigarettes that you could bring home with you.
