MSE News: Minimum wage to rise by 2.2%

Oh joy.
If the low earners want to earn more maybe they should do so by improving their experience;education and employability.
I am sure most of us would love to be getting a 2.2% rise this year; sadly we are not as most trades are struggling.
Seems a bit of a double barrelled insult. Get paid less due to the economy and other government fuelled factors, oh, and give the low earners a wage rise from our taxes too.
Lets also remember a fair few minimum earners are just that for a reason.
In my view the existing rates are more than enough for most minimum wage jobs; just a few years ago people where earning £3 an hour.
Companies need a break; not more expenditure.
what an insulting and patronising post
im a minimum wage earner - im a level 3 qualified gym instructor - re-trained for 2 years recently at the age of 40 to do it
i would love to be earning more but my employer only pays the NMW
actually not even bother going to justify it - it is what it is and im definitely worth way more:j MFi3 wannabee :j

I am also on MW, I have two degrees. I live in a region where the jobs dont exist, I could move and get another job but I dont want to uproot my family connections. So theres one reason why "MW people are there for a reason".
Second is that im quite happy with working less hours and enjoying the rest of my free time, money is not everything to everyone.
Im glad you feel you have achieved success being an accountant - but its quite possible that if there was a low demand for accountants due to oversupply than you could quite similarly have been in the same position through no fault of your own. It is a job market - which like any market, is based on supply and demand.0 -
i am on MW and i am saw fifty a few years ago.At least i am working could go on I/S and could get more money a week thought the whole idea was to to work and have a job.Is it our fault we have employers who dont pay us more?0

Yep, national minimum wage from 18 years until day before 22nd birthday is currently £4.83 per hour.Barclaycard 0% - [STRIKE]£1688.37 [/STRIKE] Paid off 10.06.120 -
Also some people are doing minimum wage jobs to get experience in an industry."It's nice to be important but it's more important to be nice." :T0

Won't it be great when everybody has a good, satisfying, well paid job?
Surgeons lining up to take your appendix out but no one cleaning the operating theatre first.
Architects fighting to design the next luxury skyscraper but no one cleaning the street it'll be on.
Advertising execs selling you every product under the sun but no one stacking shelves or working on checkouts so you can buy it!
I really can't believe some people's attitude towards minimum wage workers, they do jobs that need to be done to ensure civilisation carries on functioning! They deserve a living wage as much as anyone else, all of us in more enjoyable jobs should be grateful that someone does the work we don't want to.
Also, improvement isn't an option for everybody. Not every worker has the physical or intellectual capacity to do 'better' jobs. No amount of hard graft or ambition will turn an E grade GCSE student into an accountant if they just aren't capable of it.0 -

Aren't Gym instructors generally poorly paid and are you not able to get more money by personal training at the time? The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!

Not sure why you are having a go at me, my response was to a person who said that they were working a NMW job not by choice....the simple answer then to increase their wage is to apply for better jobs.
I disagree on your point regarding the E grade student not being able to become an accountant, it really depends on your 'want', when that person was doing GCSE's their 'want' to learn would be nothing but if they wanted to progress and become an accountant in later life their 'want' is obviously much higher and they will put more into it.
I agree with a NMW and it is one of the few things that Labour have done, however I don't agree with raising it every year regardless of the situation and I am very grateful for people who work NMW because as you say without them industry would fail.
Some people just like to stay where they are though and if they can't push themselves then that is no one elses fault, if you want to come of NMW then you have to better yourself and make yourself more attractive to employers. The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!

I wasn't referring just to you, but your post was the most succinct so I used it.
Back to the E grade student, by talking about 'want' you are missing my point. Some people are lucky enough to be of reasonable or high intelligence, some aren't and there isn't a great deal they can do to change it.
If someone works as hard as they possibly can and tries their level best, wants an A grade more than anything but can still only achieve an E, how are they ever going to be an accountant?
Yes there are people like the ones you mention who stay on NMW when they might be able to do better but how do you propose we differentiate? What should their wage be? They're still doing the same valuable work. There's no law that says everybody must do the highest paying job they are capable of but there is a law that says everybody must be paid enough to cover the basic cost of existing.0
