Nice to see that they are heaping more pressure onto businesses, wonder how many will go out of business in the next year, or how many people will be made redundant due to the increase in wages.
The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!

I'm in a low-paid job for one - and NOT by choice. I am intelligent/resourceful/hardworking/presentable - have you got any realistic suggestions as to how I might get paid the level of pay I am worth then? (...and I'm not recently out of full-time education either.....my education finished many years ago now.......).

I'm all ears for any decent suggestions you have....

    Get some friends.

"its not what you know, its who you know".

at least, in my workplace, is the case. Morons in position because they are drinking partners [probably more besides] of the boss.

...and which would you personally opt for then in an NMW wage situation? The slight risk of redundancy or the absolute certainty of not earning enough money to live on if you didnt get cost-of-living rises?

...that is not a rhetorical question either.....

I'm a bit too old now for "sleeping my way to the top":rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: and, in my younger days, was more likely to choose my boyfriends on the basis of how goodlooking they were - rather than how much money/power/influence they had anyway...:)

IMO NMW should be kept the same for at least a year. NMW is enough to live on, luxuries sometimes have to be forgone.

....<cough>....errr...has it occurred to you that the nature of your posts on this thread is showing you up as having a touch of the "Green Eyed Monster" (aka jealousy)?

You might not want to come over that way.....:o:o:o:o:o:otime

Yet I am the one who got my degree - not even a particularly good grade for it - and walked into a 20k plus job.

Only one person from my course didnt get a job - through choice due to family circumstances -and the lowest earner was 14k plus training package worth a good few grand and after 3 years was on 25k+

Why? Because I chose a degree(accountancy) with plenty of jobs and opportunities unlike the OP who now cant find a job.

Its also worth mentioning that the whole employment crisis in this country is overstated. If you have skills;experience and keep trying and being realistic you will find a job within a few months.

The long term unemployed/NMW need to look at themselves rather than blaming the recession. Yes there might not be as many jobs but there are plenty of jobs.

    Oh joy.

If the low earners want to earn more maybe they should do so by improving their experience;education and employability.

I am sure most of us would love to be getting a 2.2% rise this year; sadly we are not as most trades are struggling.

Seems a bit of a double barrelled insult. Get paid less due to the economy and other government fuelled factors, oh, and give the low earners a wage rise from our taxes too.

Lets also remember a fair few minimum earners are just that for a reason.

In my view the existing rates are more than enough for most minimum wage jobs; just a few years ago people where earning £3 an hour.

Companies need a break; not more expenditure.

    The return of Annihilator?..Wierdlittleman?....

Chemistry... a "skill of little use", once you've stepped off your high horse I can only hope you might realise how ridiculous this statement is.

Care to suggest why I am wrong?

There will be far less people taking a Chemistry degree than people taking a "more useful degree" simply because of job possibilities. People taking degees where jobs are more plentiful have exactly the same problem as moromir because far more people take those degrees. The problem is far too many people take degrees. I believe the previous governments target was 50% of school leavers going on to university which is patently rediculous. Companies do not need 50% of their employees to have degrees.
    It's someone else's fault.

Why did you choose to do a degree in a field you couldn't gain employment?

Why should I and every other tax payer subsidise you because you chose to get skills of little use as opposed to studying in a field that would allow you to be far more self sufficient?

its pretty hard to tell whether someone is able to get a job in a chosne field when they are doing the degree, they need to complete the degree first then find a job plus people do degrees most likely because the subject is of interest to them
