I'm glad the minimum wage has gone up. Low wages paid by bad employers are subsidised by benefits paid from my taxes  - make it £10 per hour and I'll be happy0

Have you thought of becoming a chemistry teacher?
I thought the schools are always low on science based teachers.
Fair enough if you dont want to work with kids in school (wouldnt blame anyone) but it would be better than MW.0 -
I meant in the context of gaining meaningful employment.
Care to suggest why I am wrong?
My degree subject is almost irrelevent, everyone is in the same boat. A lot of people my age, even with the best possible degrees and as much experience as they can possibly get, are taking minimum wage jobs because we are desperate to earn a living and not to be a 'burden' to a straining welfare system.
I'm sorry but your head is completely in the clouds, you need a serious reality check on this subject.0 -
The reduction in employment in the chemical industry is the same reason as the reduction in many industries... lack of funds due to coming out of the back end of a global recession - nothing to do with what degree the poster has.
What the general consensus is, that many people are taking the "pathetic, crap jobs" as you people are putting it, because they can't get jobs in their own fields that they could have done 5 or 10 years ago, due to redundancy or whatever. And to state that these people are uneducated, stupid, or wanting to have these low paid jobs is just plain ignorance in my opinion.0 -
[...]I basically did everything in my power to get the education and experience to improve my employability.
Despite this the only job I have been able to get in three years (and believe me, I applied for everything I could get my hands on) is minimum wage in a field entirely unrelated to my degree.[...]
I went to uni to study Chemistry but couldn't hack the second year. I dropped out and got a job in a field entirely unrelated to my [STRIKE]degree[/STRIKE] A-levels but that's expected I guess. So well done on getting this far, many have fallen in your path and not to mention, those that do would not settle for NWM jobs. :T0 -
If the low earners want to earn more maybe they should do so by improving their experience;education and employability.
Lets also remember a fair few minimum earners are just that for a reason.
In my view the existing rates are more than enough for most minimum wage jobs; just a few years ago people where earning £3 an hour.
.
 Have to disagree with that. Many NMW people are worth more than they are paid - and everyone needs a certain basic minimum level of income or they simply wouldnt be earning enough to live on (even at a very basic standard).0 -
More than likely but that will hit everyone and not just low earners so they are still better off than the rest of society who have probably worked a damn sight harder for what they get.
....<cough>....errr...has it occurred to you that the nature of your posts on this thread is showing you up as having a touch of the "Green Eyed Monster" (aka jealousy)?
You might not want to come over that way.....:o:o:o:o:o:otime0 -
Which is a lifestyle choice chosen by themselves.
Why should I have to suffer to support peoples own choices; circumstances or lack of skills/knowledge.
There are very few people in low paid jobs for reasons other than choice.
I'm in a low-paid job for one - and NOT by choice. I am intelligent/resourceful/hardworking/presentable - have you got any realistic suggestions as to how I might get paid the level of pay I am worth then? (...and I'm not recently out of full-time education either.....my education finished many years ago now.......).
I'm all ears for any decent suggestions you have....:cool:0 -

Apply for better jobs? It is the only way to progress up the ladder. The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!
If I give you advice it is only a view and always always take professional advice before acting!!!
4 people on the ignore list....Bliss!0
