Hi folks,
my son who is 17 has just passed his test and we are so happy as you would expect :j. The fun starts here as we know with not only getting a cheap decent car but trying to get a cheap insurance quote to help him along the way.
We are looking at buying a small car with a 1lt engine or similar and we would be delighted with any help and advice we can have to give him a chance to enjoy his driving! He is taking his pass plus (i think this is correct?) to not only help with the insurance cost but to help with his and others safety awareness on the road so hope this helps.
Thanks for any help

There's not much really.
Change different options, such as "On the drive", "On the road". Mine's cheaper on the road than in a garage or on a driveway (yeh, I know, !!!!!!!)
Add a parent as a named drive (NOT the otherway around). Might make it cheaper. I'm now 21 and adding my friend (the same age) makes it cheaper for some reason, haven't quite worked that out yet.
Get quotes from people that aren't on comparison sites, such as DirectLine.0 -
Aaaaarrrrrggggghhhhhhh! Are all of the thousands of daily threads asking and answering the exact same question invisible to you????!!!!I was born too late, into a world that doesn't care
Oh I wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair0 -
Stay away from the Saxos, 106s, Clios, Puntos, etc, all popular with barry boy type young lads which push the premiums up.0

Add yourself as a second driver (but not as the main as said above), they take that having an older driver around to give advice etc will reduce his risk.
Also if you look at Elephant (and a few more) they do a accelerator policy which is 10 months but gives you a years no claims. I think some insurers don't like using them as full years no claims but once you do a full year with the same insurer its not normally a problem. i did this with 2 accelerators and 1 full year policy and then switched insurers to one who were happy to accept that as 3 years no claims.0 -
The cheapest quote I got when I was 17 was through a classic car insurer, even though it was in no way a classic car! The company I use was called ClassicLine
Apparently the reason it was cheap is that I was limited to 5000 miles a year and that I wasn't the only named driver on the policy.0 -
Thanks for all the help everyone,
sorry if my post has been replicated thousand of times and I failed to look!!!! Chill out guys!!!!0 -
Make sure your son's insurance is on the database before you let him on the road. A couple of weeks ago a mate of mine's son passed his test, they arranged insurance and then he was out and about same day. He got pulled by the fuzz as the database had not been updated with his details (can take up to a week). Although he produced a cover note and all was correct, his insurance company then demanded another 25% on top of his premium as they now deemed him a risk because he was stopped on first days motoring!0

That, uh, kind of goes against the basic principles of contract law (specifically acceptance). Can you name and shame this rogue insurer?
(And that's ignoring the fact he was presumably stopped due to ANPR which wouldn't have happened if the insurer didn't screw up! Formal complaint!)0 -
try all the different companies individually and on comparison sites
dont get a french car (lol) sorry bad experiences
