Most places won't accept cheques without a bank card for which you'll pay a paid referral charge but at least it will still go through so this is a viable option. You could get a bit of cash by paying for something by cheque and then taking it back a few days later and asking for a refund (very naughty I know!)
Asda do school uniform stuff at ridiculous prices and even adult stuff. I bought a pair of black trousers, a shirt and a tie for £14. I bought an anorak for £12 and a pair of leather shoes for £15![strike]-£20,000[/strike] 0!0 -

I'm definitely going to open a new bank account though - it's recommended to do that when you are claiming back bank charges in case your bank closes your account when they've paid back the charges (see - looking positive here!)

Sign up with Quidco and open an account with Alliance & Leicester, You get a referral fee from Quidco and there is also a refer a friend voucher on the website - £50 each (this only happens when you have paid in at least £500 so won't help this month but would be useful if you switch your salary next month). They promise to match your current overdraft or give you a minimum of £250.0 -
OMG OMG OMG OMG - you won't believe what's happened to me!
We have a "lottery bingo" at work. You pick six numbers, and every week, the Saturday's lottery numbers are crossed off, and when all your numbers are crossed off, you win whatever's in the kitty. It costs £1 a week, and I nearly didn't play this week as I thought it was an unnecessary expense.
However, when I took some washing out of the machine on Friday, there was a £1 coin in the rubber seal around the door, so I gave it to the woman who runs the bingo at work. I needed 4 numbers.
I've just checked the lottery's numbers for tonight, and my four numbers came out tonight (damn - I wish I'd bought a ticket for the real lottery!).
Now I can't remember what numbers other people were waiting for, but I'm pretty sure that if I have to share the pot, it's only with one other person.
On Friday, when the lottery runner checked, there was £160 in the tin! So I will be able to collect at least £80 on Monday when I go into work, and my son can come into town and meet me for lunch and we can go and get his shoes and a pair of trousers.
So - while I thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your kind offers - ESPECIALLY YOU, LIBERTY - I won't have to take you up on them.
But I will NEVER forget how lovely you all were.
(I'm still shaking - I just don't *have* this kind of luck. In fact, as my friend says "if I didn't have bad luck, then I wouldn't have any luck at all". I'm so excited about this.)0 -

Hey, that's a point. I've got a £6 voucher somewhere I'm sure I can spare. Can one use other people's vouchers though?
BTW Hootie, have you signed up to https://www.valuedopinions.co.uk, https://www.homeofresearch.com/Index.aspx, http://www.pureprofile.co.uk/, http://www.ciao.co.uk/, http://www.sarosresearch.com/main-index.html, and http://gb.lightspeedpanel.com/index.html? They all run online surveys (except saros which does focus groups) and pay you for filling out durveys in either cash to your bank or high street vouchers. I make about £300 a year out of them, cash. Not a lot and it won't solve your immediate problem but it's great to have £5 and £10 vouchers dropping on the door mat every few weeks....0 -

Wonderful news so son will be sorted out for school. About your employment, tax situation, accountant can you let me know a little bit more about this so I can help out here. pm me if you like. I don't understand that you are not paying tax at the moment but IR need to be sorted out. I haven't seen your SOA so don't know how much you earn. I think you have been self employed and are now employed. If the business wasn't successful you may find you have tax to be refunded to you.0
