Not in NY city, but communtable is the bargain Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites in Meadowlands, New Jersey
Rates from $110.00 to $139.00 nightly (3 star accommodations)

"This location offers it all: quality, comfort and convenience. Located at the Meadowlands, where the Continental Airlines Arena (home of the New Jersey Nets and New Jersey Devils), Giants Stadium (home of the New York Giants and New York Jets), the Meadowlands Racetrack (home of the famous Hambletonian) are located. Choose from our 99 spacious guest rooms with Queen or King-size beds, or perhaps you prefer a luxury suite with our Jacuzzis for two. Relax at our indoor heated pool and release your stress in our fitness facility. Whatever your choice, this will be a stay to remember."

Here is a review of the hotel (which I can only agree with, especially the comments about breakfast - probably the best of any hotel that we stayed at during our holiday in North America this summer!)

"The hotel is up-to-date, extremely clean and offers many amenities, such as a matching fridge and microwave in our room, which had two queen-sized beds rather than two double beds, much to our content...The service was friendly and courteous and breakfast was incredible and had more than we were expecting, with fruit, cereal, muffins, danishes, doughnuts, toast, juice, coffee, and hot, gooey cinnamon buns that were to die for. We travelled into NYC by bus, which brought us straight to the port authority in Manhattan for a small charge, which beats paying attrocious prices for parking in a lot. All in all, we had a great stay at this hotel and would be more than likely to return in a future visit to New York City!"

We had a rental car so we drove into NYC (great views over the bridge!) and parked for what we thought was comparable to a capital city for charges - especially if you drive around to check out the prices first - there are usually Early Bird parking deals - but you can get a bus from across the road from the hotel.

Also, as mentioned in the hotel description there are several attractions in the vicinity such as the Stadiums nearby, a shopping outlet (Jersey Gardens) and a wonderful Cheesecake Factory 10 miles away at HACKENSACK 197 Riverside Square, Hackensack, NJ 07601. If you have never been to a Cheesecake Factory before brace yourself for a treat! They serve full meals there (very full!) with excellent service and the cheesecake is to die for. As ever, you can take away what you cannot manage to eat! There is also an eating place right next to the Holiday Inn, for which you can get 10% discount (the hotel only serves breakfast).

Hope that this helps you! You won't get anything like this price in NY City for the same standard of accomodation.

Is it OK getting back to Meadowlands (Jersey City) late, 3am, at night from Manhattan?

    Yes.

The PATH trains run from World Trade Centre to Exchange Place (journey time 2 minutes) 24\7.

Interval between trains is 15 mins max.

Cost is $1.50 per trip, unless you buy the 11, 20 or 40 trip ticket which reduces the cost to about $1.30

Subway map.WTC is near the bottom of Manhattan. Line E terminates\starts there(blue)

Map of location of Hotels in Jersey city.Zoom in, you'll find there are 4 hotels.

Hyatt is literally next door to the PATH station.

Look at the photos here. The third one in the list shows how close the Hotel is to the station.

I'd recommend doing a search on venere.com - really helpful website with lots of good maps/reviews, and reasonable prices too (which you also don't have to pay in advance!)
Plus for 4% off, use code: BK5HX8W

    Hope that helps

I went last year and stayed at the washington square hotel (from expedia - but you could go direct)

This is a lovey hotel in deco style. It is in/near the village so it is a lovely quiet area. It is two/three blocks from soho - so great for shopping!

When we stopped in New York we stayed at the Avalon on 16E 32nd St which was just around the corner from the Empire State Building. We had a Junior Suite on the 9th floor that cost just over $200 and thought it wonderful. In 1968 I stopped at the Edison that was cheap and thought it rubbish!! You get what you pay for.
