This hasn't been mentioned clearly in the media. Anyone born after April 1950 cannot apply for a bus pass until a few weeks before they get their state pension. My mum will be 60 next month and will be retiring a week beforehand as she's on holiday on her acutal birthday. She supposed to retire early Jan, but can claim on her private pensions in the meantime. She will hardly use it anyway as the bus service where my parents live is sh1te. My friend who is 60 just before Christmas can't claim for her bus pass until early Sept 2011.

The disabled persons railcard is £18 for a year or £48 for 3 years.
Therefore DEFINITELY better VFM than the Senior Railcard if you are eligible. And if you have a hearing aid, you could well be eligible, even without mobility problems!

They have already raised the qualifying date in England to be in line with when a woman will be entitled to state pension, in Scotland and Wales it remains at 60.

Regarding the Senior Person's Railcard. In Wokingham you can get it more cheaply via the local authority. You produce the required documents and pay three or four pounds less than normal at the council offices. They give you a voucher which is exchanged at a station for the card. No idea who is funding this - Wokingham are not renowned for their generosity.

The Railcard is also cheaper if you buy it online for three years - it's £65, as opposed to £78 if you buy it annually.

Some things to consider when buying for 3-years -

Over 3 years circumstances may change such that you may no longer be able to travel by rail as much.

Rules for Network Railcards were changed during their one-year period so what is to stop the rail companies introducing restrictions / reducing discounts for Senior Railcards during their 3-year term?

National Express coach cards were sold for 1 and 3 year terms. Then they introduced discounted fares for the over-60s without the need for a coach card. People who bought the 3-year card had wasted their money.
