What brand of Tinned Tuna do you buy?

Options
Apologies for such a daft question:

I tend to stick the brand names for Tuna ie John West for some strange reason. I'm not fussy when it comes to tinned beans or tomatoes etc.

I haven't given any of the other brands a chance (probably due to my mum's opinion about buying branded names)

Does anyone buy other brands, if so are they cheaper and are they any good?

Again, apologies for the question,

I get whichever is cheapest, but I always get tuna 'steak' rather than 'chunks', and always in brine, not oil.

    Thanks

My family always uses Tuna in oil, although I tend to buy the brine (as my cat prefers it!!!) and it tends to go into recipes rather than on sandwiches. I always make sure there's a little left over for the cat.

I must admit I didn't realise that there was a difference between the chunks and the steaks although I wouldn't buy the flakes (maybe because John West doesn't sell them?)

I usually use it in a recipe and I find the chunks are just too flimsy and break up too small. The steak is easier to keep in bigger pieces, if you see what I mean?

  • Thanks, that is a really good tip!!!!

Normally I end up with Tuna flakes anyway in my recipes. (maybe I should buy tuna flakes!!!) However, I'm hoping to beg my friend for her Tunafish pie recipe (which was absolutely lovely) and I think Tuna steaks are in order rather than chunks.

John west chumks from costco. Have a feeling the flakes come from closer to the bones and don;t taste as good

    Thanks Marksward

I'm glad I keep away from the flakes then. I had a feeling that they wouldn't be as nice.

My mum and dad go to Costco every now and again. I'll have to persuade them to take me next time and stock up.

10 tins for about £3.90 (can't remember if there VAT on top) occasionally they have 3 packs of 10 for £10. freind of mine is a bodybuilder and has me buying loads every time I go as they are 'so cheap'

Interesting. I always go for brine too, but I'd never noticed that you could get 'steak' or 'chunks'. Must take a closer look next time I go shopping.

Whichever is on offer at Sainsbury's or Tescos! We've done well with BOGOF on the 4 packs this year. I've converted DH from oil to brine which is better for us both! But I always make sure they are marked as dolphin friendly.

However DH is far too fussy with baked beans!! I'm quite happy with Sainsburys own low sugar and low salt beans, however DH insists on Heinz!!

but to be honest we usually only eat tuna in recipies or sarnies in a tuna/mayo mix so we just use value/smartpice etc...thats fine in recipies/mix.
