  • hi love-a-bargain,
I know it's not much closer but maybe you should try the one in Purley/Croydon it's nearer to you than Wembley i think.
But you're right they should try and open one in The South.

That's just what I was about to say. The Purley Way Ikea is nearer and easier to get to.

You'd probably take the A27 from Portsmouth to the A280, (just before Worthing), then the A24 and A264 to the M23. Follow the M23 all the way up towards Croydon; (it becomes the A23 again just after crossing the M25). Shortly after that it becomes the Purley Way, (still the A23, though), and soon you will see two tall towers (old power station chimneys) with the yellow and blue Ikea colours at the top. Turn into Ikea straight off the Purley Way. The entrance is just past the Ikea Towers - as we call them, first left (I think), off a long, lozenge-shaped roundabout.

It's very close to my 2nd-nearest Asda and my nearest Vue Cinema (used to be Warner Village), two of my favourite moneysaving places at the moment, (allowing me to use coupons off my shopping and free screenings, respectively), as well as Boots, on the Valley Park Trading Estate, (also good for sale bargins recently.)

I was very pleased to hear they would be opening an IKEA at Edmonton, on A406 easily reached (by car) from my home. But then on the local radio last week they said they would be charging customers to use the car park. The reason given was that it would encourage the use of public transport.

Whilst I support the use of public transport, it would not be easy to transport home large items or even the large amount of unplanned spontaneous purchases everyone seems to make when they go there cos there's so many bargains. I dont think I'll bother to go now if I have to pay for the car park, and I have spent a lot in IKEA in the past when I have been to the one near lakeside and the one in north London. So they have lost out on my custom and probably that of other money savers who are too mean/careful to pay car park charges.

  • Spare a thought for those of us whose nearest IKEA is a 1 and 3/4 hour drive away (if the traffic allows).... I live near Portsmouth and my nearest one is in WEMBLEY!

I wish they'd open one down here. :((((((

Have to agree, Croydon is closer to Portsmouth, about an hour in the evenings (dont forget they open till midnight)

As someone who drives on that road daily I have to say I agree with the car parking charges. The road is a nightmare at the best of times so I can only imagine what it will be like next week. Spare a thought for those of us who have to use the road to get to work.

The charge is only £1 so I cant see too many not paying. I suppose Tesco next door will have to introduce some charge also, otherwise their car park will be overflowing.

Neasden, but close enough, I was going to mention the Croydon one and think its great that one is opening in Edmonton, why, cos I live in Wembley and trying to use the NCR on weekends is a nightmare with the queues to IKEA, hopefully they will lessen:D

As a fellow Portsmouth resident I agree, does London really need 3 !!! You have to admit the big empty space on their locations map between the croydon, bristol and birmingham stores does need to be filled. They have been threatening to open one down here in the South for a number of years. They finally agreed on Southampton in 2001 but have had planning problems and I think its on the back burner :-(

As for the person who thought you can get from Portsmouth to Croydon in an hour be careful as there are lots of speed cameras about ;-)

    Cheers

Just a reminder to everyone that this is tonight....

However, having called their CS dept I won't be going:

Offers are available between the times listed BUT only while there is stock. Now who thinks that *any* store is going to carry many more than 10 of each type of sofa - especially ones they are losing money on.

So my guess would be that only a lucky few will get any bargain.

I phoned their cash office last week, (as that was currently the only no. available), and the lady said there were definitely 350 sofas going in. She wasn't sure about the other special offer stock levels, but didn't think they would be in p*ss-take numbers, (my bad language, not hers! :))

They'll probably clear out pretty fast, but get there early and you should stand a good chance.
