For those that have the same fault as me, the only way i've found to fix it is by setting up a new Windows profile. Using a new profile isn't something i want to do, so i will let you know if find a proper fix.
You'd probably solve the problem with a complete reinstallation of Windows, but not many people would recommend that!

How would a new [Firefox] profile solve this problem? By the magic of analogy, because many obscure problems in Firefox result from having a corrupt profile, and they often disappear when a new profile is created. This action is not especially difficult - but it isn't possible to force people to take advice (but it does make you wonder why they ask if they are going to ignore previous posters who know what they are talking about...)
  • Solution found, nothing to do with a corrupt Firefox, is due to an add-on called coupons24.com. In the process of trying to fix the problem i deleted a folder labelled coupons24.com because i thought it was some sort of malware. (It's not malware, just a faulty add-on which is available on the mozilla website) After this was deleted i went to a known website where the fault message would appear and it no longer did. So by luck i solved something that was doing my head in for months.

To remove the add-on i went to:

    >Help
    >Troubleshooting Information...
    >Open containing folder

    And look for coupons24.com

Three FF users who also had the same fault as me, also had this add-on and once removed the fault no longer occured for them also. If you don't have coupons24.com it may be another add-on.
