I too have just had the phonecall from a company 24/7 PC CARE, claiming they have recieved information that I have downloaded a virus and they are working with Microsoft, asked me to do some checking on my pc, told him I didn't have my pc available at the moment, he said he would call me back when convenient, I said I would call them back, given same number as above 0161 408 4448, and again Indian sounding guy named Rex Parker!!!!!! came straight on here to find out further info....don't think I will be ringing Rex back.

My wife just received one of these calls from "Global Computers", they said she was "inadvertently downloading files that could damage our PC whenever she was on the internet". I hate these types of unscupulous people , lucky for me on this ocassion that my wife trusts nobody :D
  • Had a call from Global Computer Maintenance today and the guy with a strange accent started to ask me questions about my computer. I might be in my mid seventies but I'm nobody's fool so I just told him to "go away" and put the phone down. I immediately checked the number the call was made from and discovered from the dialling code it was definitely from INDIA not the UK.

Be careful it would be very easy to get caught by these despicable people especially if you dont know much about computers.

Am a bit of a computer numpty, but don't get how this works...
How does this company infect your computer? Do they do it down the phoneline while they're talking to you?

My friend told me about it, so I've googled & found this thread. She had the call from an Indian gentleman who was adamant her computer was infected, but kept denying he was trying to sell her anything. She went along with it for a while before she got suspicious & started asking difficult questions.
Basically she says she was asked to open some files via her laptop though a series of clicks & look for any signs of infected files that might have a red mark next to them - that was when she got suspicious & ended the call. She's adamant she didn't actually click to take any action / download anything- just looked at files. She has AVG protection and her regular PC checks aren't showing anything nasty. Should she still be worried?

How does this company infect your computer?

They talk you into going to a website and downloading a program to clean your computer.

Since you were daft enough to go to the site they then ask you for your credit card details.

And you being daft enough to believe them give them your credit card details.

    That's the simple version.

Ah, that makes sense ;). Just couldn't see how simply looking at your PC's files while talking to them could be a problem, unless I was missing something :rotfl:!
The next step, I guess, would have been for her to go to their website, then download their nasty stuff...
 Can reassure her now, so thanks for replying Gordon :A

They generally make you download remote access software, then they can install anything they like.

I keep these phone calls from Global Computer Maintenance even though I tell them I don't have a computer (which is not true). How do they know I have a computer? I would like to know where they get their information from as they certainly do not abide by the Telephone Preference Service to which I have subscribed to.

    They don't! They ring everyone...
They are not regulated by the TPS, as the calls originate from outside the UK.
