Great suggestion. A five year old could come up with a generalisation like this. Well done.

That'll put a massive dent in the 900 billion pound debt. Again, well done for such a radical suggestion.

Yeah prisoners' conditions are too good, we all know this and it's such an obvious point to make that it's barely worth commenting on.

Can you give us some idea of how you think this will generate money? Anything a little more specific?

    Stick to the day job...

OK, so maybe the OP wasn't making any earthshattering suggestions - but your post was just plain rude !! The OP was just trying to open a discussion up.

And, where are your better suggestions?

I like in the UK and my idea's would be :-

I would firstly take 10% of every government department because I think that this figure would force them to stop (or reduce) wasting money.

All first class travel for government employees should be scrapped.

Prisoners currently get Sky TV (I kid you not), XBox 360's and Playstation 3's, Gyms and (rarely but still occasionally) swimming pools. I roll my eyes. They have a choice of food and meat is availabe for every meal. What a disgrace! I would reduce this to £10,000 per year and if the prisoners suffer, well, its kinda why they are there in the first place right?

I would tax all flights by an additional £30 per person per flight, increase fuel by a 2p but reduce bus and rail travel significantly - this will generate money and, of course help the environment.

    Any suggestions???

Don't worry about the rudery PG - a few people seem to have forgotten to take their medication this evening!

I'll refrain from commenting on behaviour and answer the question.

Anyway, suggestions - reduce the tax loopholes for larger businesses. They won't carry out their threats to go overseas, they never do. All UK operations can be taxed here, and they can't leave if they want our business.

Remove the tax free options for the rich. If people actually paid a fair wedge, it would remove a huge whole in the costs.

Stop outsourcing government departments allowing consultants to get rich by demonising the genuinely ill. I work full time before anyone says anything, but have a close friend who spent over 7 months trying to get help with mental health problems, during which he could not physically or emotionally work - he was fighting for help and wants to be in a position to work, but instead has spent months on benefits waiting for assessment. Huge amounts of money is wasted this way, because outside agencies get more money for doing assessments rather than helping people back into work.

Have those fit to work but unable to find work contribute to society by doing volunteer projects - cleaning graffiti, coaching sports etc. One day or ten hours a week to add something to a CV and development social skills, working in teams etc.

Put a moratorium on 'puff' projects like the big statue/metal work at the Olympic Park. This is a waste of money and serves no purpose. Stop trying to get the World Cup here - we can't afford it.

Focus on integration of immigrants and provide language skills and re-training. I know a Moroccan who has a law degree but is working as a chef because he cannot afford the conversion course. He is, however, working full time and supporting himself, but could contribute more tax to the economy if he could use his skills.

It might be obvious, but the reforms of prisons does need to happen. Removing the luxuries and replacing them with training and skills, jobs inside (catering, library staff, cleaners etc) would reduce the costs. It might also help reduce recidivism and therefore lower the costs - less prisoners equals less costs, so stop people ending up back inside.

    Cancel unelected quangos.

Tell the EU that rather than require a support package like Greece in a couple of years, we are reducing our contribution to them by 50% for the next five years.

Reduce overseas aid to countries that are not run by democratically elected governments. Dictators divert funds to allies. Why should we fund them.

Stop trying to replicate our imperial history, and stop pretending that we are bringing peace to the world. Bring our solders home.

Don't just legalise drugs, nationalise them. Allowing people to purchase controlled substances produced under strict guidelines would create an industry, provide jobs, reduce crime, stop the illegal trade and be taxable. If I wanted to smoke a joint, I would rather buy a strictly controlled product that I know does not contain any other toxins and put money back into the economy, than buy a dodgy bundle of marjuana off a bloke on the street who is part of a huge illegal trade that costs lives and who probably spikes the product with more addictive substances to get me addicted and come back for more.

Legalise, regulate and tax prostitution. Same reasons as above.

I am a realistic, practical liberal who is turning into a fascist as she watches the country turn to crap as it is run by unrealistic people who have no clue about the real world. Amsterdam functions well. Let's be grown up about sex and drugs, realise we aren't a world power and live within our means for a bit. Just don't allow those who really need help to fall by the wayside in the rush.

Prisoners get more money spent on them for food per day than a typical solider in the army, so reduce the standard of the food.
