What cut backs would you make to the economy?

Options
I like in the UK and my idea's would be :-

I would firstly take 10% of every government department because I think that this figure would force them to stop (or reduce) wasting money.

All first class travel for government employees should be scrapped.

Prisoners currently get Sky TV (I kid you not), XBox 360's and Playstation 3's, Gyms and (rarely but still occasionally) swimming pools. I roll my eyes. They have a choice of food and meat is availabe for every meal. What a disgrace! I would reduce this to £10,000 per year and if the prisoners suffer, well, its kinda why they are there in the first place right?

I would tax all flights by an additional £30 per person per flight, increase fuel by a 2p but reduce bus and rail travel significantly - this will generate money and, of course help the environment.

Any suggestions???

Great suggestion. A five year old could come up with a generalisation like this. Well done.

That'll put a massive dent in the 900 billion pound debt. Again, well done for such a radical suggestion.

Yeah prisoners' conditions are too good, we all know this and it's such an obvious point to make that it's barely worth commenting on.

Can you give us some idea of how you think this will generate money? Anything a little more specific?

Upon reflection my post was very general and non specific. It was meant to prompt the discussion rather than be a thesis on the economy. I found your post rude by the way.

It was indeed and would save very little

My concern on any cuts is that it shouldn't have a disproportionate effect on the poor ie like VAT, cuts in wealth fair etc this of course will effect the poor anyway no matter what with cuts in services etc

I don't think there are any truly poor people in this country, just some poorer than others as will always be the case.

Execute everyone doing more than a 10yr stretch. That will save a few quid

Set Benefits at a set price per head, No execptions. The minimum amount to house in the cheapest location, the minimum amount of food (Aldi/Lidl/Farmfoods value fodder only) - that will stop people living in luxury through benefits.

On Benefits - No free car for you Mr !

Put VAT on everything, Antiques, luxury yachts, 1st Class Travel the whole lot.

Scrap the rubbish they teach in schools, e.g Social Care !!!!!!?? go back to teaching kids the basics, teach them how to Write (long overdue), teach them Maths. That will get rid of a potful of so called "teachers" who spout this rubbish.

Scrap Cycle Lanes and stupid speed humps. that will free up millions

Scrap the ideology that remaining a Student until your 30's is a good thing. Get people working, get people manufacturing, using their education once the rubbish taught in schools is scrapped. Save all this Student Loan nonsense. Stop wasting millions on these malingering workshy layabouts.

Ensure increases and cuts impact on ALL and not just certain sectors of the community i.e. those working.

Look at increasing rural public transport BEFORE you pile on the duty on fuel.

Move the heart of government into the heart of the country and not leave it haemorrhaging money in the most expensive city in the country (if not Europe)!

How about addressing the £125 billion tax gap before we start making cuts?

    Benefits - agreed.

Students - disagree. I've had to do a degree to pursue the career path I want to. I will pay back my student loan, and be paying a lot more tax into the system than I would have if I'd not got my degree and stayed on little more than minimum wage. Swings and roundabouts on that one. I am not, and never have been, a "malingering workshy layabout", thanks.
