I ordered a book from the book people the other Christmas and it was delivered by a private courier - in the evening - they left it on my windowsill - I live on a terraced street (near a school so lots of people pass by in the mornings). It was in cardboard wrapping and it was raining.

It was only blind luck I looked outside later that evening and miraculously found it, and to add insult to injury the corner of the book was bashed (was meant to be a prezzie).
A waist is a terrible thing to mind.

About three years ago I was given a small box of Christmas puddings that I couldn't use as they weren't gluten free. I offered them on freecycle and someone arranged to come and get them, I warned them I was gardening and wouldn't hear the door and that I would bag the box up and write their name on top and tuck it up by my porch door. They arrived about 30 minutes later and the puds have already been stolen.

well as i live in appartments things have got a bit trickey before now, the postman used to have a key for the front door (the downstairs communal door-not mine! lol) and post all the mail in the right boxes, and leave parcles under the mail boxes-these arnt the kind of appartments where theres a doorman or anything, lol! well more than a few times in the past year people have has issues with parcels, they say they have a card in their mail box but no parcel.......now there are 2 people who always seem to be in, so surely the psotie could ring their buzzer and get a signature? and then they can say ''well there are with apparment 2'' for example.
now the postman doesnt come in, just posts letters through the main door, and small enough parcels at about 3pm, then everyone has access to each others post, and there are more than a few people in my building that i wouldnt trust as far as i could throw them, so i dont feel very happy when i know that they are handling what can sometimes be very personal medical related post-the fact that they could just take them as they please.....

is there a letterbox on the main door?
if so thats your delivery point and when timing the duty
that is what it will be timed to
perhaps the postie has changed and doesnt even know about the internal boxes
also, why do you feel leaving packets in a communal hall is safe?
I wouldnt be leaving packets there if i was on delivery
they would be carded and returned
same as trying other neigbours, how many are in the building?
If i were to walk up to the bulding, how would i get to those people who are in and how do i know which ones you trust?

I live in a block of flats too, and having had problems in the past with mail not arriving, find it is safer to get any parcels delievered to work.

Have always wondered about the post delivery. The block I live in has about 20 flats in, and there is a main entrance which has a letterbox thru, but envelopes get delivered thru the letterbox in my door, so I assume that the maintenance guy distributes mail after it's been delivered, as the postman surely wouldn't have the time allocated to go to each door on each floor.

I would hate to have to be knocking on neighbours' doors to see if a parcel had been left for me, much too intrusive, esp as most of my neighbours are relatively elderly, and i don't know them, and one is stalking me :(

I would definitely rather have to pick it up if I'm not in, as then I can go on the way to work etc, and not have to be reliant on someone else who lives near. And no problem with parcels being left in a "safe" place and not turning up.

Make it easy for the posty and leave somewhere for him to hide the box's - preferably somewhere not in view of the street :)

    well thats my attitude
Its easier/better if its a consistent policy
if that policy is to card and take it back to the office then so be it

    exactly.
Maybe others would feel differently, but if someone's parcel was delivered to me in their absecne, first off i don't really know my neighbours, and i'd feel put out and responsible for getting it to them, which isn't all that feasible, with my working hours i'm not home very often, and usaully get home a lot later than old dears' would be in bed i suspect.

Ive got a parcel here for next door but one
I cant stand the people but my partner is more social than me and took the packet in
she's off to work and now Im left having to deal with it
some of the neighbours i would id it for them happily but not these ones

a few years back I had to take a bike company(hello Dave Hinde you bunch of liars  ) to court
they had sent it to the wrong address (my old address) and the courier left it with a neigbour
who then said they had given the package to me. I was over 200 miles away
    however it got messy
now if that package had been returned to the depot then it would have easily been sorted
