  • Not how to get them but what you can do to be OS with friends without them thinking your bonkers

I started a magazine club - wanted it to be a book club but mnever get enough time to read a book very often - so now a group of us have all taken out a subscription and pass the magazines round - saves me a fortune as I am a bit of a magaholic - Very sneekly brought a freind a subscription for christmas of a magazine that i wanted and then invited her to join the group!

Must add it was a magazine she wanted as well!

    Hi blessings3,

We have a quite recent thread on Old Style and friends, so I'll merge your thread with it as it helps to keep all the replies together. Posts are listed in date order, so you'll need to read from the beginning to see all the replies.

  • Thanks Pinked wings love this thread!! My friends are a mixture but I think I am OS - lite compared to most of them - they think I am frivelous! lol

My cooking or non cooking is a joke among them - my dh is an excellent cook and has ''keep'' house for the past 6 years and I have suddenly had to start cooking as he has gone to UNI but they have all been so good and helpful - this baord has been brillent to!

Some of them are very eco friendly (read bed toilets etc) but thinking about it they are all very money savvy think it just may be the sort of person I gravitate to.

I have used OS ''thoughts'' to actually shed friend well aquatentses - I do have a very outgoing open personality and am a chatterbox and tend to end up with alot of people who ''know'' me and come round for coffe univited as I work from home - I begn to realise they were waisting my time and money as I would end up doing things with people I didnt realy want to spend my time with and not spending enough time with my close freinds. I am now much more ''reserved'' asnd donnt tell people I work at home unless I know them very well and I also voulunteer less for commities and stuff so I can do more for causes that really interest me rather than stuff I think I ''should'' be doing
  • I don't have any OS friends except my parents, all those who I work with like to mock my OS ways, but it doesn't bother me.
I have been frequently referred to as a young pensioner (I'm only 33), because I like to play bowls, make my own jams and marmalades, and have a vegetable plot to grow my own.
The way I look at it is this, if I do a little every day to save me a few pennies, then annually those pennies are many pounds. I am not OS in every thing that I do, as I am sure many others aren't, but I always feel proud in the individual achievements I make along the way, and the new skills that I learn.
    I had a plan..........its here somewhere.

Yes, most of my friends cook from scratch most of the time and mend and fix things. We all work full time, so we are probably not as OS as some people on here, due to lack of time, but we try!

One friend blames her OS-ness on her Northern Irish Presbyterian upbringing-where baking is as substitute for naughtiness :rotfl: (her words not mine:D ). She is the most well dressed person i know, and if anyone thinks you can't be OS and be glamourous etc should meet her! (and have some of her millionaires shortbread :))
  • Right - does anyone else get the piddle taken out of them for being OS???....................................... The only person who seems to approve of and not make fun of my OS lifestyle in my nan. Shes in her 60's easily but was raised through wars etc, she is very moneysaving, has her store cupboard, reuses, recycles, mends where possible, makes her own gifts, grows her own fruit and veg, cooks from scratch for everything, knits, crochets, cross stitches, and is definately the biggest influence and supporter in my 'quest' to become an Old Style money saver and more self sufficient and I enjoy my chats with her plus shes offeredto come an dhelp me whenadn if i ever ge ta bleeding allotment! ................................................. My mother who has very little money after her wages are spent and a useless bf who deosnt help would rather live on ready meals for the remainder of her life, my sister is a brand sl@t and wont eat anything with the word 'Value' in it and her bf wont eat hardly anything value either as he says it tastes cheap. My dad although he grows his own veg too laughed his head off and said i was becoming a right skint flint because i was baking bread by hand yesterday most of the day then sat wrapped in a duvet in the living room so i could watch tv - he said i should of just stuck the heating on - no i want to try and keep the heating off if its not needed and it wasnt exactly minus temperature just a bit nippy and me and bf were snuggling under it : ) ............................................... my bf supports me in this too - he loves all the home cooked meals and baking i do, how resourceful i can be and the fact we have a our christmas shopping almost done because the money we've saved we started buying gifts with. which means he has got the money spare to take a course he always wanted to do and our debts are beign paid off without worry plus i get a few quid at the end fo the month to treat myself.....................................So i was just wondering does anyone else get grief for being O/S???
    Time to find me again
  • I don't get grief for being a bit O/S but I'm older than you! I think it's great that you're following your nan and not the rest of the family. I bet they wouldn't turn down one of your home made loaves if they tasted one. You carry on and keep O/S-ing. The benefits will outweigh the comments.

Hi sammykaye, seems to me like you are doing a grand job. To do all you do and have a lo is hard work. If it means you, your bf and lo have a better life/more money for things you want then where's the problem. As poster said above I bet they don't turn down your Hm prezzies. You are not being a skin flint just making the most of what you have and not having to overspend, to others standards.:T :T

    Hi Sammy,

There's an older thread on this subject that might give you some help with dealing with any negative attitudes, so I'll merge your thread with it. This thread might interest you too:
