vauxhall astra fault diagnosis

our 2005 automatic vauxhall astra went into limp mode and transmission/electrics warning light came on

this has happened before and was a loose switch (near the accelerator) that the rac man jiggled and fixed for about 8 months.

same happened again today but when the rac came out they could find no fault. but he suggested we 'get it diagnosed' which will take 11/2 hours and cost a huge amount, i'm guessing.

should we take it in to the diagnosis place anyway? anyone know what would be likely to happen if we did?

thanks in advance.

phone a couple of local garages and ask them how much they charge for a computer check. around here they will charge you about 30 - 35 quid to plug it up and tell you what the computer says. it takes 5 minutes for the computer to read the problems

This. Try and find a local independent vaux specialist if possible. Avoid the dealers as they will rip you off for the diagnostic as you say. Our local independent vaux specialist did a computer diagnostic for free on our old corsa a couple of weeks ago.

    do the pedal test.
accellerator to floor , brake pedal pressed.
turn on ignition but dont start.
the engine management light will "flash " you the fault
have a pen and paper ready
it is a 4 digit code
the first digit will flash and then there will be a short pause b4 the second digit and so on
    1 flash = 1 , 3 flashes =3 , etc (10 flashes = 0 )
if there is more than 1 fault it will do them 1 after the other until they are done
add letter P and letter O to the beginning of the code (eg . PO0335) and post on here and I will look up the fault for you

Could be the switch on top of the gearbox. Quite common fault and easy to replace.

One small test to do - put the ignition on, but dont start the car, put it in reverse and have a look to see if the reverse lights come on. If they dont - check the fuse for the fag lighter. (Sounds strange I know...)

    reverse lights come on ok
no lights flash at all- so no code to post

should i still take it in for a 'diagnosis' or does this mean nothing would be found anyway???

    crankshaft position sensor.
Probably the most common fault code.
Misfire, limp mode, poor starting, then eventually it won't start.
Use a genuine vauxhall replacement, copy parts aren't very reliable.
