  • now, be fair to the original poster. us brits do suffer from food poisoning very easily when on holiday.

i was in egypt a while ago, at a 5 star hotel with superb fresh food. however, about 2 dozen brits came down with severe food poisoning. astonishingly, they were the same people that could be seen at the swim up bar from 8am, with no sun tan lotion, and no movement until 7pm, when they would wrench themselves away for dinner, back at the dry bar by 7-30pm. its astonishing how selective it was.

i heard there plane home was also going to be diverted, apparently after an hour the drinks supply on board ran dry, and a diversion to the nearest brewery was considered.

on a serious point though, if you had food poisoning, unless it was a meal served just for you, by a chef cooking just for you, other people would have symptoms.

I got the Pharaohs revenge in Egypt & I'm virtually T-total. I might have picked mine up on my day trip to Cairo though.
So its not all to do with drink:beer:

My son had salmonella food poisoning while we were staying at a Thomson hotel in Ibiza. He was 11 months old and had to be rushed to hospital where he was detained.
It was only diagnosed as salmonella on our return to the Uk. He was very ill for a long time, and we had to take stool samples to the hospital for analysis three times a week for 4 months until he was finally clear of infection. As he was in nappies he couldn't have contact with other children while he was a carrier, so he was unable to go to the childminder until he had the all clear. My wife and I had to take turns to stayy off work to look after him. As you can imagine, it ruined our holiday and the subsequent 4 months.
Thomson dealt with our case very well and eventually did compensate us, to the tune of around 30% of the cost of the holiday. Obviously we had to provide evidence of being out of pocket - loss of pay etc. - as well as full medical details.
  • hi mrse, i do understand that in egypt sickness can be an issue, and a lot of hotels/restaurants clearly are to blame as they are just not veyr good in a lot of cases. i guess what i was trying to get across is that we always blame foreign food, as brits we seem allergic to foreign food, i think it s a huge fault with our society and shows a lot of ignorance that is a shame to inflict on locals the world over.

i wouldnt mind betting though that most people who get ill in egypt do so from handling egyptian money. its the filthiest, most germ infested money on earth. i get round this by using US dollars. i make sure that i get them in the uk, in small denominations, so i am unlikely to be given change as i can give the right money!
might sound daft, and i really am no hygiene fanatic, but it seems to work. i get ill from dodgy food very easily, not crippingly ill but i feel it, if that makes sense, and since i did the money thing, it happens much less.

sorry to everyone if my post seemed too blunt etc, but i really do think in my experience of travelling, and food poisoning, we brits only have ourselves to blame 90% of the time.

It has been confirmed I picked it up on holiday .

Who has confirmed you picked it up on holiday? Has someone been to the resort and tested the restaurants? Who did this and who did they send the report to?

The money story is a myth too. If you wash your hands before you eat (as you should) then it won't matter what you've been handling.
