Sky Box Extended Warranty - Skylight Insured

Options
Hi

I just wanted to give others a warning. My mother has taken a call from a company claiming to be frm Sky to offer her extended warranty on her Sky box. She told him she didnt want this but he was really pushy and she ended up agreeing to take the cover. She then gave her Debit card details and they confirmed she would receive a letter and have 14 days to cancel.

She just confessed all of this to me and I told her that she shouldnt have given out her details as it might not have been Sky who were calling. She did get their telephone number and it turns out to be a company called Skylight Insured. I have called them and told them I want to cancel immediately but was told that they will callback within 5 days to arrange for the cancellation to be processed. I stated that I wanted this cancelled immediately and asked to speak to a manager but there was no one there.

I now hope that they do call her back and she gets her £80 back but I just wanted to post a warning here in case others get similar calls.

I have also told my Mum not to agree to ANYTHING over the phone again, she said she knew as soon as she hung up that she shouldn't have agreed to it but that the guy on the phone was so pushy that she gave in!

I will be contacting Sky to make them aware of this company and to find out whether they have provided customer details to this outside company.

I'd be keen to hear from others if there is anyone I can report this company to. Thanks

Don't wait, send a recorded letter cancelling contract and demanding funds refunded to both their registered company address and the contact address they have given you.
Request director details from company's house for £1 and send one to them as well.
No moneys refunded then follow up with demands and letters before action in county court.
    Easy.

With insurance policies you have a 14 day cooling off period. The bad news is that the company can deduct an admin fee.

I think they are provided the names by Sky.......as the only thing in our house that is not in my name is the Sky contract, and they never call for me, always ask for OH by name. Unfortunately, he's hardly ever around the phone, and as they always seem to call around dinner time, they usually get me answering. I ask them if they are 'from Sky', the usual answer is 'yes'. So I tell them I want to upgrade the service we have, can they put me through to the right department.....of course they cannot - as they are not Sky and cannot transfer me to them. I usually give them an earfull about stating they 'are Sky', when they are not. I can see an elderly person feeling that these guys are pushy - they are - she just needs to know that she can hang up on anybody on the phone - it peeves me to see the elderly preyed on by any of these companies!

IMHO,this 'insurance plan' is a complete waste of time. You pay a company what,£80 a year on the offchance your Sky may go wrong whereas if it does a Service charge is £69.Not very MSE is it? (Not attacking anybody here, just stating fact & opinion) Add those £80 insurance charges & it soon adds up.
In all the years I've had Sky,I've had 1 service call,& that was for a borked Thompson Sky+ box.

I too have been caught by this deceitful company. Last week they phoned and said that my Mother's warranty had run out, I asked if she dealt with them usually and they said yes - I gave them £110 from her debit card ( I have power of attorney) then checked her last insurance only to find it does not run out until October. I immediately rang them back to cancel only to be told they would contact me with in the next 2 days and send me an email....... I am still waiting and everytime I ring 08449671999 for customer services I get music for 6 minutes and then nothing. I am going to contact Trading Standards and complain.

If you like, but it wont help, just send a demand and then take them to court.

why anyone would pay for a extended warrenty is beyond me, i have had 2 Sky boxes die on me and all i have done is phone Sky go through to their cancelations dept and tell them i am leaving since i cant afford a new box and bingo, a free new box and half price for 3-6 months to take out another 12 month contract with them
    Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)
