It would if the 0845 call was being made at evenings and weekends.

For this particular problem, there is no need to make a phone call. Even a call to The Virgin Team, would only cost 10p regardless of the length of the call.

  • OK - this worked on two separate models of Motorola phones on the Virgin network.

To amend delay before Voicemail kicks in:

To find Voicemail number key in *#67# and hit dial key and note number presented. This will begin +44 and will be along the lines +44072XXXXXXXXX.

Write the full number presented down for use later.

Key in: **61*(number from above - but no brackets req'd)**30# and hit dial key

('30' in the above represents a 30 second delay before voicemail kicks in - this can be adjusted to 45 seconds or whatever).

No it can't because 30 seconds is the maximum!

Many thanks, that works fine for me on my Sony K750i. Looks like the default is 15 seconds.

thanks a lot guys, I really appreciate it :)

Stompa, how did you know the default was 15, did it come up saying it was changing the original time from 15 to 30 or something? mine just flashed up the answerphone number a few times.

I timed it before and after making the change! - otherwise how would I have known that it had worked?

ah ok, I thought maybe it had flashed up and asked you to confirm the change. I just wanted to check in case I was supposed to have seen something similar.

But your advice is based on the assumption that the original poster uses an alternative call provider and not everybody does! Like yourself, I do not use BT but lots still do, where it would not cost any more!

Yes it was, and my example stated BT, however most people still use BT, for the ones that change they usually change for the better,i.e. cheaper calls or free,(as with Primus), but ALL other telcos charge more than BT for 0845/0870,(with the only? exception of 18185, as far as I know).
How much does your telco charge for a daytime call to an 0845 number ? I bet it is more than 3p per minute.

Let me share a post I cribbed from "saynoto0870", I think the author was Heinz and I think it sums the case perfectly.

I have a BT line but use call1899.co.uk to make my peak calls to 01 and 02 numbers for 3p each (as long as I want for a fixed fee of 3p). I also have a package with Primus that gives me free calls to 01 and 02 numbers off-peak. However, instead of 3p per call peak, I have to pay 3p per minute for 0845 calls (it's less off-peak but the rip-off is the same because anything more than the nothing I normally [don't] have to pay is too expensive in my book).

Ignore me though, consider the poor pensioner who has no home telephone and has to make his or her calls from a telephone box.

To call a standard 01 or 02 number, the telephone box flat rate minimum charge of 30p buys a call of up to 15 minutes duration - probably easily long enough for most calls.

If the 'target' number is an 0845 number, that telephone box flat rate minimum charge of 30p buys only the 10p 'connection charge' and 2 time periods - each of 55 seconds. Consequently, that same 30p minimum charge would run out after only 1 minute 50 seconds - probably just time enough to hear the first set of "Press this, press that" instructions on one of those awful automated systems.

So consider what that 15 minute call would cost if it had to be to an 0845 number instead of an 01 or 02 number.

There are just over 16 periods of 55 second in 15 minutes so, at 10p for each, the call would cost the telephone box flat rate minimum charge of 30p plus 15 more time periods at 10p each.

OK, I'll save you the bother - £1.80 How much loose change do you carry?

That's why 0845 numbers are evil - they rip us all off and they rip off the less fortunate proportionately more
    .

But if you want to keep on using 0845 please go ahead, I am not trying to stop you, just save you money, which is what this site is about.
0845 will always cost more than 01/02 numbers, especially for savvy members of this site.
