  • Rang Barclaycard a couple of weeks ago to reduce interest rate on my CC. Rate was 19.9%, got this reduced with a bit of haggling to 9.9% for life.
Rang them last week to see if they will do anything about the cash advance rate which has gone up from 21.9 to 27.9% in the past month or so. Said they were unable to do anything about this "because its governed by the Bank of England"!!! i did try and explain to the poor girl that the BoE base rate had inceased, but only by 0.25%- she was adamant that this was the reason rate was 27.9% and they could do nothing about it. Have since applied for Egg money card and as soon as that arrives its goodbye Barclaycard.

As mentioned on another thread, My Halifax Plat Visa was 15.9%, with a clear balance. Got a letter telling me rates were all going up, to 21.0% !!!

Called them to close it, they asked why, I said because of the rate rise, and got offered 9.9% on purchases after a minute on hold....result !!

FROM WHAT % TO WHAT %:

  • Mint. o% ends on 1st Nov so called to see what apr I could get, going from the standard 15.9 to 7.9 which is good considering, the week before, the whole balance is being moved to the new m+s card at 3.9% til its cleared.

Was encouraged by this post to lower my APR

    Current

Halifax 22.53%..... Threatened to close account and they said i have to lower balance first as im near the limit... Some encouragment.

Cap 1 30.90%....... They say its a standard APR and can not lower. Even when i asked to send me a final balance statement and said i will pay the whole lot of by October 19th when i get paid to close account.. They set it up for me to close my account automaticallly....Oh and a letter is in the post telling me its going up to 34.94%. Total rip off!!!

Get back on the phone and speak to someone else at both these places. Those are very high APRs and you might not be asking in the right way. If you are brave ask to speak to cancellations, they will be better placed to help you and you can explain you are *thinking* about cancelling as the apr is not competetive, and the reason you are at your limit is the extra interest they keep adding on. You never know.
