Wonderful results with a rung-out rag dipped in the ash can.

Best to use rubbber gloves as the above strips away all the gunge.

And good advice elsewhere to leave the stove door ajar until the fire has really acquired maximum heat (for mine, about an hour).

The spray-on products range from the mighty rip-off to the almighty expensive. And Lord knows what you inhale (sorry Bill C)

Spit on crumpled up newspaper dipped in wood ash.

Never much soot on glass anyway so the above does me well; takes less than a minute.

I keep a small box of wood ash for those days when I'm burning smokeless.

Anything abrasive such as ash will scratch the glass surface and cause it to go opaque.

If you are just looking to remove smoke then Flash Clean and Shine in teh trigger spray bottles works well. Squirt it onto cold glass, let it sit for a couple of minutes then wipe off with newspaper.

If you have tar on the glass then ACR Smoke remover is very very strong stuff, it will fetch it off ok but needs careful use. Available from some stove shops, if in difficulty call ACR in Birmingham as ask for their nearest stockist details.
