Try a lemon or lemon juice, the acid breaks it down and its not harmful in anyway!

dont bother with any cleaners, damp kitchen roll cleans mine
  • Take a small bowl of hot water. Roll a sheet of kitchen towel into ball. Dip a little bit into hot water and then dip it into some old ash (say from the tray) and rub onto the glass in a circular motion quite firmly. Do this again. Dip a some more kitchen towel and wipe the glass clean. Finally, one more to dry it off. Takes about 2-3 mins. Works a treat.

    Couple of things:

Damp newspaper dipped in ash works well IF you've ONLY been burning wood! Ash from smokeless fuel is likely to scratch the glass.

As a sweep I clean stove glass for customers every day. I've tried the aerosol cans and don't think much to them. The stuff I keep in my tool bag is Calfire stove glass cleaner which comes in a trigger spray bottle - one bottle lasts even me for months and it seems to remove just about anything - wouldn't be without it!

A little bit of washing up liquid and a kitchen towel.. no problems with it coming off at all...

If you don't use something with a little bit of degreaser in it you could end up scrubbing for ages when there is no need.
  • Stovax glass cleaner works for me. Cheap as chips, bottle lasts for years, and cleaning takes less than a min :)

Need all the spare newspapers for the cats litter trays ;)
