Doesn't look like you can. And there are two types of JBOD. One that does what you've said and one that registers the disks as independent.

SmartStor NS4600

ReadyNAS as you can see is set to RAID 0 but both disks are independent. Think it's just the way their software handles it.

And this is why I thought RAID 0 would do independent disks on the Promise.

I got the Synology DS410j in the end. That does BASIC which is what I needed for the independent disks.

I've just checked the manual for the Promise; it states the modes of operate are only RAID 0, 1, 10 and 5. As you've found the discs can't be accessed independently. Page 97 - http://www.promise.com/media_bank/Download%20Bank/Manual/NS4600_PM_v2.0-100.pdf

The data sheet confirms this: http://www.promise.com/media_bank/Download%20Bank/Datasheet/ns4600_20090521.pdf

It seems you bought an inappropriate device (and no doubt way more expensive than you needed) and you could have found this out, as I've done, before purchasing!

Regardless, as stated you're entitled to return it within 7 days for a full refund. You only have to pay the return shipping cost.

I'd advise getting it returned and then make a complaint/claim against them for any costs they've charged which they shouldn't have afterwards. At least at that point it's clearer and you've got the majority of your money back already.

Yes I know all above. But if you look at the picture I posted of my ReadyNAS. RAID 0, on both discs, yet both discs are independent. So I can be forgiven for thinking that RAID 0 on the Promise would allow me to do the same setup.

I've sent it back and e-mailed them pictures before I sent it. They've spot communicating now. I suspect management have told them to stop replying to my e-mails. After the mention of the Small Claims action was mentioned.

Costs £21 to send back :(

No doubt way more expensive than I needed? Excuse me? Do you know how much data I need to backup? No. And it was actually one of the cheapest and best specced four bay NAS drives. Because of speed. Just shame it didn't do what I wanted.

Got the Synology DS410j instead in the end. Does what I want, just isn't as fast and getting to the HDDs isn't as quick and easy. But still painless. And the inbuilt software is much better than the Promise was. And also allows for scheduled shut down of the unit.

Correct I don't know all the details, however you did pay for a RAID device when you didn't need and aren't using RAID so it's reasonable to say a non-RAID device would likely (though of course not guaranteed) have been cheaper and more suitable.

I was just trying to be helpful. Remember it's ME HELPING YOU here, so it would be wise for YOU TO BE POLITE in return!

Hi, I have purchased a laptop through the dell home section and the laptop is a consumer laptop and not one advertised in the business section. Now the problem is I ordered through my company business card and to deliver to my business company address but before I submitted the order, it clearly stated that :" By completing this order you are representing that your purchase is for personal use."

Now I have requested an order cancellation and I am worried that they might apply their business terms and conditions and refuse a refund.

Basically the one I ordered was a mistake , so I sent a cancellation email and ordered another one with slighlty different specs and I also mentioned that in the email. Simply, I want to cancel one and keep the other.

I now have 2 laptops to be shipped and am worried that I might not get any refund at all due to their business terms and conditions

Please could you throw me some light on this and how dell may take this further. Thanks

DSR don't apply to B2B transactions.

Case closed. They gave in and refunded me in full :)

Thanks for the help.
• Can't say I'm impressed, do you feel better now joeypesci?

You made a mistake and bought the wrong thing, why can't you take responsibility for your own actions?

I'm sure he feels good getting what he is legally entitled too.

When companies start trading online it is up to them to be aware of what regulations they need to follow, and therefore they must realise the risks that DSR bring to them.

DSR is there to allow consumers to inspect and test goods which is what the OP did.
• You are wrong.

The idea behind the DSR's are so that a customer can assess whether to purchase a product as if they were in a shop.

For example, they may ask the sales person to take the item out of the box, or to try it on if it is an item of clothing etc. If you go into PC World for example they may open a box of a computer if they haven't got one on show, but they would not be prepared to plug it in and power it up etc.

I think people take the mick out of the DSR's. The OP stated in his first post that "it did not do what he thought", hence it was his mistake, not the sellers, therefore why should the seller lose money on this, as it may have now to be sold as a B-Grade item.

So what do people want, all the small to medium businesses to go out of business because they are losing money on stock people are "trying out". Then we'll be left with the big companies who can afford to put up with this situation, then we'll be moaning at high prices because there is no competition.

If I buy something wrong, I admit it is my fault, and either resign myself to keep it or sell it on myself.

Not all laws are 100% correct you know. This one has been introduced for a good reason, but as I have already stated, consumers are taking the mickey with it now.

I kinda agree but as most online shops kill the margins compared to the high street stores then they should abide to the laws that do cost them money and if they don't like it then they should increase their prices and margins...
