What am I missing?
Trolleys have quite pronounced corners and a reasonable weight to them. It wouldn't take much speed to give it enough energy to punch a reasonable dent on a relatively flat, thin sheet of mild steel. The OP also stated that the trolly damaged the rear of the car, that could be the rear corner, or even the rear wing. "Rear" is quite a broad term.0 -
Of course the OP can always make a claim - it might not be successful but they can still try. Also the singes they put up are pretty much meaningless - the don't absolve the carpark owner of any responsibility if they are liable for an incident. Its only about £50 to take it the small claims court - worth a go in my opinion.0

I'll tell him to "sod off" for £30...... Bargain!0

It depends on whether or not they have people who collect the trollies during the day.
If they don't, you won't get anywhere.
If they do employ people who should be collecting them, then you have an arguement they were negligent, and may be able to take it further.
This is basically around the wrong way.
Even so the OP would have to prove they have not taken "Reasonable" steps to avoid this type of damage.0 -

Down to the op to decide then, I suggest she takes proper legal advice.0 -
Indeed.
"I was stopped and saw this shopping trolley rolling towards me"
"What did you do?"
"Nothing because I thought it might stop"
The OP clearly stated that the trolly was abscured from view by parked cars. I've already likened it to a child jumping out from between parked cars. I'm not sure that implying the OP deliberately got their car damaged by a shopping trolly in very helpful. Whilst I think we can accept that the OP, in all probability based the information available, wasn't to blame, that doesn't automatically lead to the owner of the trolly being at fault. Sometimes, shlt happens.0
