Unions in La La Land?

I read today that the head of the public sector union Unison has promised significant action to try to derail cuts and cost savings in coming years

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/10325310.stm

I know that he would be naturally inclined to be against these measures but realistically, what other choice do we have? Under Labour, the public sector has become bloated and inefficient. Attempting to maintain it will be a giant millstone round the neck of UK PLC over the medium term and this bombastic rhetoric doesn't exactly help things...

Should be interesting to watch anyways!

It'll be the end of unions. They had a place during the 70's but the world's moved on and there are plenty of new laws to protect workers now. They don't need middle-class hating fat northerners to fight their corner.

Look at public opinion on the BA strike.

Less public sector workers = less unions subs being paid.

Less union subs being paid = union leaders having to justify their large pay and reward packages.

Solution = keep union subs coming in by ensuring members are whipped up into a frenzy to strike. This is nothing to do with being 'worried' about the economy and everything to do with maintaining their income streams and stranglehold on the public sector.

The Union does make some valid points about cuts being too deep, but striking isn't the answer, it'll just focus the electorates mind on how much better off the public sector are (or are percevied to be). Looking at the last brace of strikes - BA, Royal Mail, Firemen - not much sympathy for those striking workers from the public in general - even if their argument was valid.
Anger ruins joy, it steals the goodness of my mind. Forces me to say terrible things. Overcoming anger brings peace of mind, a mind without regret. If I overcome anger, I will be delightful and loved by everyone.

I tend to agree re employee rights. I'm in HR and, for example, the hoops you have to jump through to (properly) get rid of ineffective people are quite numerous!

    True.
Have you ever heard of a teacher getting the sack for just "not being very good at the job"?

If the unions are so worried about the forthcoming spending cuts then why don't they make a donation to the cause rather than the party that caused many of the problems?

The union at my old job were rubbish so I cancelled my membership and I will never join one again. A mute one legged 98 year old baboon could have been more effective than they were.

What an absolutely classic MSE right wing love in.

I think, apart from reminding these cuties about how the current governing class actually laugh at them behind their backs as they chauffeur their kiddies to toffschool and get their health care queue jumping in at Harley Street, I'll just move on and leave them to their self-evident hatred musings regarding the majority of their fellow citizens.

Trying to pull self-imposed blinkers from the eyes of others, when those blinkers have become so much part of the cranial architecture that they would pull out what's left of any thinking brain if disturbed, strikes me as more than somewhat futile.
