tronator i don't have another pc in the house & no access to another one nearby.
Laz tried the repair option but not sure if i'm doing it right, is it StartUp repair? If it is then i tried that but everything still the same, i should also mention that when i bought the laptop i wasn't given an installation cd.

Try disabling the User Account Control (UAC) http://www.petri.co.il/disable_uac_in_windows_vista.htm then see if the usual RUN command works when you install progs. You'll get a pop-up on taskbar to warn you about the security but just ignore.

Laz you're a genius! It's worked yeehaaa :j:j:j. I've been able to save the latest AVG software to desktop and run it from there no problem!

Do you think i've did something when i was trying to do a clean up then and is it safe to leave UAC off all the time?

I leave UAC off on my lappy all the time and ignore the annoying popup. There was a cure to change a registry setting to prevent the popup but it didn't work for me.

    Glad it worked.
