I run Vista home premium on my laptop & for the last couple of weeks its stopped installing any new programs or updates. Windows updates install no problem though. Programs appear to be installing properly but click on "run" & nothing happens, no error message program just doesn't exist when I search for it.

I've been trying to clean up the laptop recently & I'm wondering if I might have deleted something I shouldn't have. Aside from this everything else seems to be fine.

Can anyone help? I've tried posting on another site but didn't get any replies :(

Have you tried the repair option?

Do u mean repair it back to a point in time? I was going to repair it back to around a month ago but was a bit unsure, while I'm not a complete newbie I'm not so tech savvy when it comes to faults with the system & was worried I'd mess it up even more.

If you haven't got an external hd it's worth getting a flashdrive so you can backup any data. You can run a sfc 1st before running a repair http://www.support4vista.com/tips/system-file-checker.htm

    Click on 'run'?
    Im confused by that statement

All your supposed to do is double click the '.exe' file of whatever it is your trying to install
What happens when you double click the 'exe' file? Nothing?
Tried RIGHT CLICKING and selecting 'open'?

    aliEnRIK,

Sorry prob not explaining it right. I select to open the file 1st & it appears to download the file but then when I get to the option of running the file I select "run" but nothing happens. I've also tried saving the file to desktop instead of opening it then running but when I go to the desktop its not there, tried searching for the file but get nothing at all.

Laz thanks for the advice, I don't have an external hd unfortunately. Also could u tell me what an "sfc" is? Sorry not very good at this am I lol

Im sorry but your terminology is confusing me
" I select to open the file 1st & it appears to download the file" by download you actually mean INSTALL. Downloading means downloading off the internet. Installing is taking the downloaded file (or whatever) and making it usable

"but then when I get to the option of running the file I select "run" but nothing happens."
Im not even sure what you mean by RUN
Once installed you should get a SHORTCUT on the desktop. DOUBLE CLICKING that icon will automatically 'run' that program
If its NOT on the desktop after installing then go bottom left an open the list of programs and get it from there

What operating system are you on? XP, Vista or windows 7?

Im wondering if your downloading the files but lose them before installing which means they should be in your DOWNLOAD folder (Which still need INSTALLING)

A System File Checker will restore any system files, registry etc that have accidently become corrupt or missing. If you've cleaned up your pc you may have deleted a file required by the run command to not proceed. It's simple to do, takes about 30 - 60 mins. I do it when my pc's not as fast or as usual. That's after running malaware/ virus scans. I'll give you a link, if that doesn't work, for a free vista software to burn a cd.
