consumer rights for purchase of tv

Can anyone help?..bought 50 inch tv approx 14 days ago but it has developed a humming noise which is pretty off putting when watching anything. What are my rights regarding this. I want to return it and request another make/brand..because I have a feeling its a general problem and dont want to go down the route of it going back to the manufactor just to come back with the same problem etc etc???

Check the leads, my TV developed a hummimg noise which turned out to be a dodgy SCART lead. If that's not he problem get it back to the retailer ASAP and ask for a refund/replacement.

It sounds to me that it could simply be the backlight which can emit a slight hum. If you have dynamic contrast switched on then this could account for the change in pitch when the picture changes.

  • You asked for help and have received no advice of any use to you on here. I am wondering if these forums are overrun with trolls serving the interests of the retailer. Here is the advice you seek. Get it back A.S.A.P. State that under the 1979 Sale Of Goods Act the goods are neither "fit for purpose," or of "merchantable quality." The set you have purchased has an obvious inherent fault. Where there is an inherent fault it is up to the retailer to prove that fault does not exist if it occurs in the first six months of purchase. You are returning the set within a reasonable time. Do not accept a repair. Demand a new set or a refund you are legally entitled to this. If you get resistance write to the managing director stating your case and giving 7 days notice of intended legal action. Never ever phone anyone do it all by letter so you have proof in any dispute that may end up in court. If you require any further help P.M me. I have never lost any dispute i have contested using the act. Hope this post will shed some light in the darkness that constitutes this forum.

If the hum is distracting from the overall audio, take it back. I've had a few samsung TVs back at work where the hum of the backlight was a total pain. They shouldn't make any noise, really. Even Panasonic's plasma TVs that had fans inside made a tiny whirring sound.

Also, within the first 6 months, not only do you have your standard warranty, but if that failed, the onus is on the store to prove it's not faulty.

What make/model is it by the way?

Slightly on-topic, I once had a customer return an LG that was buzzing. I could hear it. LG refused to issue an uplift since it couldn't be heard with the volume set to 30.

30 was much louder than most people would ever use it on...I could've...grr..
