I won't bore you with the full story, but I was constantly told CPL were awaiting:

    Mortgage details (none involved)

Good grounds to have sacked them.

Of course you're absolutely right - I just thought it was the "waiting for a bus " principle, ie as soon as you start walking it shows up and sails past you, and I honestly couldn't believe that a simple transaction could possibly take so long. I was convinced it would just have to complete when they promised it would (six dates that fell through, by the way.)

They really don't listen. I lost count of the number of times I was told they were "just" waiting on survey and mortgage info, of which there was none because there didn't need to be!!

I'd never use them again. And the named "solicitor" (I use the term loosely), whom we'd been told had left, perkily rang me when it finally went through, said she hoped we'd use them again in the future, and hoped the feedback form would reflect our satisfaction.

It reflected something, put it that way.

They certainly described themselves as such 18 months ago, when I was going through the prolonged hassle of dealing with them. Perhaps the Advertising Standards people have leant on them (although obviously not hard enough...)
