It's an American thing!

Options
Hi All.

First of all my apologies if this isnt the best place for this, but I was hoping for a little help!

Basically its my BF's birthday on Sept 11th. Now he knows I havent got very much cash to splash, but I still want to do something (obviously!).

Now we both dream of going to New York one day! I know its not achievable whilst the debts are still going, but I've made myself a little pledge to save a little bit when and where I can, to put in what is now named the "New York,New York" fund.

The BF has no idea about this and thinks he's getting socks for his bday :T
So my plan was to surprise him with a little money saving chart (already lovingly created) which will track the progress. I've decided to only put £20 in per month that is made on ebay/amazon/car boots etc, because any debts must go first. Plus at Christmas, I'll put money into it as opposed to large gifts, and hoping he'll do the same for my ticket :o

My parents are also putting money in for my christmas and birthday present!

ANYWAY.............
the main jist is, obviously I dont want him feeling empty handed on his birthday, so I decided to make a hamper, of all things American/New York related.
I've got a fair bit already, but I was hoping to maybe add some foodie types!
And thought where better than OS for recipes and ideas.........

Now so far the only typically american foods I can think of aren't going to keep very well. I was going to make it 2 days before so was hoping for something that will last in an airtight container

So if anyone has any ideas, they would be most gratefully received!
Thanks all in advance xx

Lots of ideas here. I don't mean you to buy from that site  but hopefully it will give you an idea of "traditional " US food.

I was thinking that cooking something but just say although I cant afford much, I've made a whacking great effort :)

what about buying the ingredients for an american breakfast, lunch or dinner?

for example if you wanted to make pancakes, you could buy the flour, milk, syrup ect pop them all in with recipe then u could make them on the day.

Or just surprize him with an american themed lunch you prepare for him. You could even do some room decorations.

I had thought about that, but I wont actually see him on his bday. He's got a weekend away with the boys, plus we're both working on his bday, so I was going to drop it round to his house, and ask his mum to put it out for him on the day!

Although maybe a pancake mix box and some syrup could go in........ that way he can bring it back when he comes back to where I live for uni, and technically I'd get them back!

    What a fab idea!

They are definately larger (like anything american!:D ) also delish! my favourite are snickerdoodles (don't you just love the name) I think I have the recipe somewhere! When we went out to florida earlier this year I tried to make a point of sampling as many cookies as I could! (now on a diet:o )

Would you be able to post or pm the recipe?
Am I right in thinking the snicker part relates to snickers choc bars!

    We're both allergic to nuts...............
And anything I make, I want to be able to eat some of it :)

Don't have a recipe for snickerdoodles, but I do know they have nothing to do with Snickers bars. They're an old fashioned biscuity-scone type thing I think.

Are you planning on taking your NY trip on Sept 11th ? Might not be the happiest time to be there...
