As old-style as I like to consider myself, sometimes you just can't beat a good dose of monosodium glutamate.

I try to buy as little pre cooked - reheat as I can but I do buy tinned beans, sometimes forget to soak beans when I want to make something, so a tin of beans in the store cupboard is handy. I also buy tesco 11p batter mix, my yorkies are diabolical, have no idea why...... a packet does us for two meals, I just use half the packet and a clip to keep it fresh.........I also occsionally buy those choc dessert whips, oh loves them..........however we never have take aways, not even fish and chips unless we are on holiday.....then its usually because we are at the sea and the fish is very fresh...... we found a super fish shop which did sit in meals in Looe this year, recommended by a local it was superb.

Budmiser, if you want help finding brilliant things to cook from scratch this is the board for you. I have learnt so much, I truly love my slow cooker and now love my delicious weetabix cake among other tips. If you want to keep going on about whether modern or oldstyle label is the best for this may I suggest you go somewhere else, if you want genuine advice from the nicest group of people on the internet stay put here and you will learn loads, we will certainly do everything to help you. In China they celebrate when you get on a bit in age, they have a huge party when you are 60, unlike our celebrations of being 18, they respect the wisdom that comes with age, so to be old style on our board is considered to be wise, you can still be cool too. Try and get over that issue and welcome to our happy board.

Old age isn't bad when you consider the alternative.

Mum bought the kids some crisps, LOTs in fact, 'as a treat' They had some with their sandwiches at lunch. 15 different ingredients in a packet! And people are surprised I don't buy them very often at all. Some people think Im being mean/tight but I spend the money on fruit instead and dont want to put rubbish in my childrens' bodies. Except when mum visits...

Some of the ingredients on ready mix packets make me laugh. Pancake mix - just add egg and milk. Oh, so that means I'm buying mmmmm FLOUR!

I was in a very nice farmshop attached to a National Trust property in Norfolk last week. They were selling upmarket organic cake mixes. I looked at the ingredients list and it was just flour and raising agents, in other words it was self-raising flour with a recipe printed on the box and a fancy price

Btw, Calley's point about convenience food and obesity is, I'm sure right, but if you do too much home baking like I do the result can be obesity too  :D I've just made the mocha squares after swearing not to make any more sweet things:o
