  • Microwave ready meals are usually quicker than cooking from scratch for one, but if you're cooking for a family it's often quicker to create a meal yourself. Even if you are cooking for one, you can always make extra and freeze it, then you have a microwave ready meal for some other time.
The amount of sugar in a lot of shop-bought ones is ridiculous. I'm on a low-sugar diet for health reasons, and I was quite shocked to discover just how much added sugar goes into dishes whose home-made equivalents would have none, and taste much better.

Oh lord yes! Those stupid omlettes! I can't believe that my mother buys them :( They take longer to heat up than one does to cook!

And personally I am proud of being an old styler and of passing on my knowledge to the next generation. To my mind Old Style does not mean second best, the same as modern does not mean better!

  • It shocked me when I saw a microwavable pancake too lol

I must admit though I keep the ready packed pancake mix (11p basic from tesco) in the cupboard for my teenage son to make his own.

    Indeed.

Frozen gravy, however - I don't know how I lived without the extra 5 seconds I save. Definitely worth the extra expense.

When I saw thew frozen gravy I was like

Let alone ready made pancakes

We are becoming a society of who can and can't cook that is.

I do understand for some people like the elderly/disabled who have problems with peeling etc getting ready made roasties etc.

But for people with a full working body there is no reason apart from laziness. And they wonder why obesity is on the rise. It all the carp that people are shoving in their mouths let alone there childrens.

Most of my friends eat convenience foods all the time and they nearly all complain that they don't have a lot of money. I have tried explaining about cooking from scratch, offering recipes etc but they don't want to know. One young couple I know have 2 children (4 and 3) and only the husband works bringing home £200 a week. Their weekly shopping bill in Asda is £85!!! Their trolley is full of unhealthy expensive convenience foods.

At the end of the day it is up to people what they eat but to then moan they have no money!

Well if you want me to I'll hand in my safety pin now, and collect my coat on the way out!!! Confession - I sometimes let M&S do it!! There 'tis said!!! I occasionally buy M&S ready meals. They may not be as good as homecooked, but things like their steam cuisine are pretty good, very quick and very convenient for when the family all want differnet food at different times and I want a rest!! I treat them as a warm up your own takeaway!:D Or eat out without the bother of booking the table!

But having confessed to that I will now show my inconsistency! I would NEVER use a jar or canned sauce, never use packet mixes ( You know chicken tonight, sausage casserole mix, bolognaise sauce etc etc). If I cook, it's from scratch right down to the spice mix. Have never used a cake or pancake mix. Bought a packet of breadmix because I've never made bread and it's still in the cupboard because it feels "wrong" to use it. Now that is daft!!!:o Bet there are loads who frown on my readymeal who have no trouble emptying a jar of sauce over some meat and cooking that. Not being critical or provocative honestly, just pointing out that I bet more are inconsistent than think they are!!

But I do agree too many people aren't aware of how they could do certain "readymeals" in the same time from scratch as they take to reheat, and without all the extra chemicals. We are "taught" by the advertisers that "they" do it quicker and better than we can!!

Anyone remember the sudan dye incident from the last year or so.

I was lucky as I was on of the smug people who had not bought any of the items that where on the list.

As I buy very little ready meals. I will admit to buy the odd jar of pasta sauce and tins of beans.

I count on one hand the number of times I have bought a meat pie. I do buy the odd sausage rolls for husband.

And I do admit to buying the odd packet of Jaffa cakes and bars of chocolate.
