Righto bud-miser, shall we start this again?
Welcome to Old Style
Ed Lass..... you can keep that one in your pocket until you get permission to wear it again. Until then consider it confiscated
Thanks Jay Jay, can I use it to keep my sussies on my basque0 -
bud-miser wrote:I seem to hear with monotonous regularity people complaining about how short they are of money - and then sitting down to a cosy evening watching non-terrestrial (i.e. paid-for) TV with a nice, microwaved £3-worth of microwaved 'ready meal' in front of them.
I'm sorry but, as far as the latter goes, patience has to run thin. Do it only once a week and a family of four runs up an annual bill of £750. I don't know about you but £750 comfortably buys my family its annual holiday. They say the art of cooking is dying - but I wonder if it could experience a renaissance if enough 'moneysavers' realised:
A. Just how much money is lost to Mr Tesco through the purchasing of 'convenience foods'.
and
B. Just how pleasurable (and tasty)(and easy to do)(and CHEAP!!!!!!!!)(yes I know, that last one's a repetition of 'A', but what the hell..) a home-made macaroni cheese can be!
Though this might be the wrong board to mention it, ready meals needn't always be expensive: I think Farmfoods still have Thai chicken curries with rice at 3 for £1, and if you visit the supermarket near closing time, there's sometimes some really cheap stuff in the reduced section.
This should, of course, be balanced with proper home cooking, for which you're on the right board now. There are loads of good recipes and useful tips around here.0 -
IMO there is nothing better than a proper home cooked meal. yes we do have an odd takeaway as a treat. but i enjoy making a meal for the family to enjoy. we all sit at dining table and chat over the days events. ok my 1 year old likes to mash his dinner into the plate sometimes and my 3 year old like to give her vegtables away , but at least home cooking is so much cheaper than a bland ready meal.
i'm only 24 but sometimes i feel like 54 , with all my home baking and i'm just venturing into home made wines and jams and chutneys. but i LOVE IT.0 -
Bravo.
Money saving via cooking at home = 'old style'. Correct, yes?
Logically therefore, spending money on Tesco ready meals = modern, fresh, up-to-date.
Well done Jay Jay and Pink. Bravo.
And no, I don't have a problem with names, I have a problem with LABELS. Ask Mr Tesco - he'll tell you all about the importance of labelling and image.
I think I'll just go off to the parlour, find my old pipe and slippers, put on the wireless, pour myself a glass of Philosan... and chill out.

'Old Style' to me doesn't say 'outdated', instead it conjures up images of wisdom, making the best use of resources, and of tried and tested solutions. Therefore, it's logical that spending money on Tesco ready meals isn't modern, fresh and up-to-date, ninety-nine per cent of the time it's just wasteful and dozy.
There probably are occasions where a ready-meal makes sense though, and Granny would most likely have given in and used them too now again, just as she'd have used a front loader (with washing soda!) if one was available rather than fight a mangle for one day a week. Just as Old 'Style' accommodates electric breadmakers and slow cookers, it can accommodate the odd ready meal too so long as the new-fangled freezer's not full of them
Like I said, I think Old Style is just about making the best of your resources. If it conjures up images of Granny, it's not because she hailed from an outdated era, but probably because, compared to many people today who believe something's not edible unless it comes in a box with a list of additives printed down the side, Granny had more senseEek! Someone's stolen my signature! :eek:0 -
I have never bought a ready meal whilst living in my house (1st home..lived there for 1.5 years) I used to buy a couple when i student digs but soon grew to hate them.
One thing i find is that many of my mates will buy them because they are quick, yet many dishes i make are just as quick (10mins to cook etc). Yesterday i had lamb steaks marinated in mint, dried chilli flakes and olive oil. Cooked some new potatoes and garden peas (out of a tin) finished with vegatable gravy with freshy chopped rosemary in it. As i said it took 10mins to cook. Much better than a microwave meal and gives you house a lovely warm aroma.
Just bought some marlin from the shops so im going to google it and see what i can do with it.Smile and be happy, things can usually get worse!0 -

Hi all, Bud-Miser, I did find your first post on this thread felt like it had a bossy overtone to it, then your subsequent responses seemed quite accusing of us Old Stylers. From reading the whole thread, I'm not sure that was your intention, but I loved Jay-Jay & EdinburghLass's responses.
Tralaa Tra Laa Tra Laaaa
Anything else I have to add was covered by Pounds_& _Pensive's response, so I'm off to skip round the daisies now
Byeeeeee!

Maybe there is a forum dedicated to cooking but I couldn't find it! Please feel free, M Moderator, to move this wherever appropriate. Maybe the students forum would be quite an idea...I never said I had a problem with any names... I had a problem with being told what to do and where to go. Check the thread.
I think you actually did ask where to go!!!!!
I love being OS, i have no problems with the name, and everyone who is a regular on the OS board is lovely!!!!!0 -
I don't understand this thread, preaching to the converted surely?
I don't get ready made anything except cereals and some of our bread. And wine, though oh makes some beer and wine too;)
I'll just get my coat;)Member no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:
