Obviously not, they couldn't count anytime i'd had off for my depression as general sickness so couldn't dismiss me.
This was Tesco's & they have really strict absence management schemes, I was so pleased to win my arguement as I wanted to carry on working.
As I said unfortunately this didn't prevent them from bullying me which inturn lead to me leaving anyway hence i'm now on IB.
If employers were more understanding of the reason why people were off sick ie. genuine illness as opposed to just wanting Monday's off because you'd got drunk at the w/end or having a Friday off because the weather is nice & you want a long w/end so many people wouldn't be on IB.I'd rather regret the things I've done than regret the things I haven't done.

Different discussion, but if fewer employees threw 'sickies' employers may deal with genuine sickness a little more seriously.I was born too late, into a world that doesn't care

I think the conservative government are taking away our liberties with their approach on benefits - especially incapacity benefit. I am currently ill and I have been on incapacity benefit - and I still need it. I just want to be left alone to get better and get a job that I 'really' want to do. David Cameron is trying to force people off sickness benefit and force them to do any old job - just so that he can get people off sickness benefit. What rubbish is that..? So, if you are a highly skilled professional, then it means you've got to work in a factory or clean toilets..? I am highly educated and skilled, but my time off work will make it hard to get the work I used to do - because people are just prejudiced and bigoted in the market that I am trained in. What is David Cameron gonna do about that..? Does he think that people will suddenly walk into the jobs they want..? No, that's why he wants to just get people of sickness benefits and force them to do any job, just any excuse to get you off the benefits that you REALLY need. I am not a benefit sponger or scrounger......I have 2 university degrees and certifications and some experience....before I got ill with chronic depression. I don't need the crappy help of government to get a job, because I know what job and career I want to follow. The government schemes at job centres are always pathetic for graduates like me. They waste your time and are only suitable for illiterate and under-achievers, degenerates, etc. I don't need help to write a CV. What I need is real help to get the job that I want and know. I want a government official to sit with me in an job interview to check that I am not asked any prejudiced questions and unfair questions regarding my illness and time off work. I want the government to get me back to work with a personalised approach and real help. People like me should be getting paid compensation for the years I spent at university to better my life and provide to society. I think the UK is slowly becoming communist with this new conservative-liberal government. Forcing people into 'any' work is what the communists did and that is happening now in the UK. What next...?
This needs to be in Discussion Time, I am sure you will get hugs and sympathy there and maybe even someone to hold your hand at any interview!0 -
The OP will have something to moan about when he gets put onto ESA. That is of course if he still wants the Goverment's "crappy help"

My concern isn't with the fact that people might have to do jobs they hadn't 'planned' on doing - that's life! But what about people who genuinely struggle to find work they can do? They do exist. My OH has MS, and is reasonably steady on his feet, but he is unbalanced enough to be ruled out of most manual work. This wouldn't be an issue if he didn't also (most unfortunately) have reasonably severe memory issues on top. It means he is largely unable to learn new tasks and processes - cannot find his way around unfamiliar places etc. The knock-on effects are huge, but to most people, he seems hardly disabled at all and so perfectly able to work - tell that to the ten or so employers who fired him for under-performance before he eventually claimed Incap (no problem getting jobs at interview, but real problems holding them down).
The real difficulty with getting people back to work lies with the reluctance (implicit or explicit) of employers to 'put up with' employees who bring all the baggage of a long-term condition with them.
The anecdotal experiences of people going through the ESA application process, who report interviewers failing to record real day-to-day difficulties, really concern me.0 -

It makes no odds is you're a secret Albert Einstein. If you are capable of work, you are capable of work, then you shouldn't be on Sickness benefits.
Even of course you are using your superior intellect to sit at home and figure out the meaning of life, unless you are actually unable to do anywork, then you shouldn't be on sickpay. All over the place, from the popular culture to the propaganda system, there is constant pressure to make people feel that they are helpless, that the only role they can have is to ratify decisions and to consume.0 -
I think the Conservatives and Labour towards the end were right. Most people on Incapacity can do some work or another. I have a spinal injury. Can't lift a fag packet yet I work doing what I'm capable of. Like you, I have several qualifications - three of them are no longer of any worth to me as I cannot physically do the work.
Why should someone who has a bad leg not work in admin for example?
Many people who are depressed are there because of reasons of their own making. They live a life shovelling greasy crap down their throats and can't be bothered to work then feel worse because they can't do anything because they get £65 a week to live on.
what a complete and utter load of bilge !
if you cant lift a fag packet can i ask what you actually do for a living,as for people being at fault for their own depression thats just the opinion of a bigotted fool.0
